I've had my car a few years now and I've got through a lot of fixes and niggles. But I've always put up with the AC not working. It blows hot air with an unpleasant burning smell when on, sometimes it's very very mildly cold, when I say cold don't imagine cold, just a slightly cooler heat than the heat already in the car...
So what's going to fix it? Is it a big job, expensive? A re-gas?
Anyone tackled this job in theirs?
Cheers

Does the compressor kick in to signify the 'AC' controls are working? If not there is not enough gas pressure in the system.
Firstly I'd take it for a re-gas to see if it has any leaks. Kwik-Fit (yes I know ) can do a re-gas and it's so easy a chimp could manage it with some training so it should be straigh forward as a long as you dont get the 'fitter' i had who opened the front trunk looking for the engine
The process is automated (but tell them how much gas is needed as 964 might not feature on the system). If it has a leak - no charge. If it works and then fails (due to a small leak) full refund. So at this point you have spent nil.
If there is a leak you then need an AC specialist unless you can see the dye coming out anywhere to trace the leak. If it's not a pipe then start with the condensor (c£90), drier (c£40) and then evaporator (c£80) with expansion valve (c£40). The first two parts you could do yourself, the evaporator is a 10hr job and involves a lot of parts to be removed - not complex but not for the faint hearted. My Indy did it for me and you ideally need to find one that has done it before.
I've done the condensor, drier, expansion valve and then had to commit to having the evaporator replaced That said it now works a treat
My evaporator looked as bad as in those pics! _________________ The game's afoot. It's time to put a bit of (Colini) stick about......964/993 wanted. Cash waiting. No dreamers

Do you get the unpleasant burning smell with the heater but no aircon? The heater motor is easy to change and cheap if you buy from ECP - the Porsche part I took off was Valeo and this is a very expensive part from Porsche. ECP do a Valeo part for about £80 and a cheaper alternative, I initially bought the cheaper p[art but it rotated the wrong way and didn't work!!! _________________ Mike

Thank you both so much, I'll look into those options.

Are you sure this was for a 964 as the heating comes off the heat exchanger direct from the engine and is 'assisted' through the car by a series of fans _________________ The game's afoot. It's time to put a bit of (Colini) stick about......964/993 wanted. Cash waiting. No dreamers
