Precious Pricing

As you all know, the prices have been moving up in recent times and I am now finding myself in a position that I didn't really contemplate happening so soon.

I purchased my 997.1 turbo 2 years ago and had one eye on the "minimal depreciation" & "possible future classic" thing and the other as a fun toy to be used for high days and holidays.

My plan was for a keeper and to hopefully use it for 10 years or more and then sell at a little profit or break even.

With the recent gains on prices I am now finding myself getting a little precious over mileage and condition!

My odometer is at 9200 miles ready to hit the "collector wall" at 10K and therefore be worthless.

Should I cash out and get a 996 or cash in and get a GT3 or stick and wait until they hit 250K next spring? :floor:

WOW nearly 10k miles, thats worth peanuts :thumb:

Difficult to answer, so i'll answer as if it was mine and how I would feel:

I think they are fetching good money now if its a manual. So, if it is indeed a manual, and speed and acceleration is not the be all and end all, it must be one of the lowest miles example around and is worth a tidy sum, to the point, where with a little extra cash you could get a GT3.

However, then you will be worried about putting miles on that, but some consider it the holly grail !!

Its Difficult, a lot of us Turbo owners face the same issue, I very very nearly bought an F430 a few weeks ago, but with the extra cash id have to pay out, I bought an M3. Right thing to do??, who knows but I drive around in a lovely M3 rather than a bag of sand Lu Lu.

Oh and PS - If its a Tip, of course you are better off just running it into the ground :thumb: :bye:

It ain't exactly going to be 'worthless' when it passes 10k miles. I'd carry on as you are for now, enjoying it on sunny days and weekends.
I love driving mine. I sometimes get precious about the mileage on mine then think 'stuff it, I'm off for a blast'

With that I'd just drive it to and from the MOT every year if its a manual. Its going to be worth silly money in 10 years. Well done on buying a collector quality car

As you say just buy a C2 to swan around in - great cars :thumb:

I was talking to a customer today with a 997.1 turbo manual with 19000 on the clock black on black good spec, he was going to sell last year at £55k. I asked him today if he was selling and he said I hardly use it but he'd kick himself if he sold It now only for it to be worth £100k next year 😳

OP: These cars are mileage sensitive, despite whatever anybody says otherwise. Even worse if you are into Italian V8's. But all is not as it appears. A Ferrari specialist I know recommends buying a 360 or 430 with mileage on it, not a garage queen. That means around 25-35k miles. But one BIG caveat - absolutely impeccable service history to the schedule with genuine parts and for the 360, cambelt changes on the dot every three years whether the car has been driven or stored.

In time this general approach could apply to Porsche.

10k miles is still low (you don't mention what year the car is). Remember, a true collector may buy at 10k miles ans simply store the car and is likely to have a number of other vehicles to use for daily use and weekend trips in the summer. The store car may only see daylight when it goes for a service - keeping the history going is key even for a stored car.

So a lot of 997 Turbo owners will still be out and about putting miles on their cars - probably not daily driver miles but certainly 4-6 months of weekend use at 3k miles per annum. So there is a sizeable pool of such cars with higher starting miles than yours and rising each year, and so long as you are modest and not putting on 10k per annum, yours is likely to remain a "low mileage" example versus the pool of cars available for buyers.

The one thing I'd say is keep the service history to the schedule to preserve its value and interest when you come to sell. OPC or indy is down to you and is an argument I wont go down. But its an interesting observation that sellers are keen to advertise and state where it is the case of a full OPC main dealer service history as a sale-ability factor, so there is something more to this debate than meets the eye for 996 and 997 model range.

My 10 year old Turbo is on 42K miles. I bought it at 2 years old and 10K miles, done various annual mileages between 800 one year to 10K another. Yes it's a lowish mileage car, but I enjoy it too much to store it away to preserve it for someone else. It's never going to hit stratospheric values as per some exotica, so I'm going to keep on using it as and when the mood takes me which quite handily averages out to about 4K miles per year.

Personally I wouldn't want to drive the 997 turbo and add miles to it. You are potentially sitting on a lot of money in the future especially at that mileage (totally different to people expecting to attract collectors with cars over 20k miles). If you have available funds I would hold onto the 997 turbo and buy another car. Im guessing you are a car guy and hence enjoy driving. If you were to just keep the 997 turbo, it would be like marrying a supermodel and then sleeping in another room so the next guy can enjoy her company.

For me the best thing about owning a 911 is driving it, same for my Ducati, so my advice would be to keep it, drive it and enjoy it :thumb:

I feel your pain, a true FWP. I have a 2007 DB9 on just under 9k miles, my plan is to do a few hundred miles in it per year, but each and every mile is special. My 996 turbo was bought on 21k miles and is now close to 36k. Fortunately that has been modified so is pretty much worthless anyway. If you want to drive it but don't for fear of what it might do to the future value, why not sell it now, take some profit and buy one on 60k miles that you can add 20k to. You will prpbably still have free motoring but also some money in the bank.

Errr sell it

Buy a pork that you feel less precious about :dont know:

Having a beautiful car that you don't want to drive is like being married to Rachel Riley and only shagging her once a month :floor:

Hmmm Rachel.....

I would say having a go once a month is still worth it though, I would start early doors, and make it a long epic ride, it would always be special then as you would be all worked up and excited having looked at it for the past 28 days or so.

Sell it, for reasons you've already given. It's possibly peaking near the top of its price hike. Secondly you're not driving it because the mileage is of clear concerns. Lastly if you want a chance in life to get a GT car it's a good time to buy one by comparison of money difference.

The enjoyment is driving the damn things not watching the ODO thinking of the costs or you might as well not have it at all. All your getting for your money is a pat on the back from the Insurance company for basically giving them free money for a car that lives with the handbrake on. Just sell it. :thumb:

Having a Porsche and averaging 20 miles a week seems like sacrilege to me, just the same a doing Rachel Riley only once month :nooo:

Your plan was a good one and remains so.

However if you're starting to think of it as anything more than a fantastic car then only you can decide whether to cash the investment in now or 'mothball' it and cash in at a later date.
