Last March, 6 Months into Porsche ownership, my car was diagnosed with bore scoring whilst in for a service with RPM Technik. There were none of the usual signs at the time, no smoking or sooty left tip, no ticking from the right hand side of the engine and oil consumption was much less than Porsche limits. I must admit I did doublt the diagnosis at first, communication wasn't great and I didn't get the chance to see the cylinder condition for myself.

To say I was gutted is an understatement, and has really taken the edge of owning the car over the last year, to the point I considered just getting a cheap fix and selling it on.

The symptoms started around the end of the summer, sooty let tip first, higher oil consumption and eventually the horrible ticking noise :frustrated:

I'd decided to keep the car and did a lot of research on who I could trust to fix the engine, what the options were etc. Hartech were the obvious choice but I spoke with other specialists to understand their solutions, what their recommendations might be and to get an idea of costs. I dismissed any solutions using iron liners, just doesn't sit well with me from an engineering perspective. I also communicated with a couple of forum members on here with the same problem to get their views and experiences. In the end I decided to go with Hartech, I think I was always going to go with them but needed to be 100% sure.

I dropped my car off in early March and enjoyed an extensive tour of the premises with Grant, great chap and spent a good hour and a half with him talking through the process.. for me this is one of the most important things, particularly when spending a big wad of cash!!

Hartech confirmed the bore scoring as diagnosed, heavy scoring on cylinder number 4 and there was now slight signs of scoring on cylinder 6 too. With the engine out and everything inspected Grant talked me through what needed to be done, what I should also consider doing and a few things that were worth doing whilst the engine was out, most of which I had expected.

I went for the full rebuild, all six Hartech liners, 6 pistons, new crank and big end bearings, new IMS, new cam chains & guides, tandem pump, A/O separator, top end de-coke and valves re-lapped.. plus a few other bits and pieces, coolant pipes, clutch slave cylinder, coolant tank etc, they have also fitted my new sports headers too :D

The car is all ready for me to pick up on Thursday and can't wait to get it back.. and a few presents waiting for her when she gets home :D :D

You have had to wait a long time mate but it will be worth it for the future proof enjoyment :thumb:

Sounds, like a job well done. Dare I ask, what the bill is. I'm starting to budget for this when my warranty runs out.

Jonny, the bill will vary a lot depending on what other things you need to address while the engine is out and what options you choose. Hartech's pricing on their website is pretty spot on!

New crankshaft? Bloody nora. Do they balance the crankshaft and blueprint?

You made the right choice mate! :thumb:

The cost may sting a tad at the moment, but when you see what a transformation they've made to that car with the mechanical engineering experience and knowledge these guys have, you won't be disappointed.

The full rebuild you've gone for is the best on offer. Even cars listed in the classifieds that say 'Hartech rebulid' will likely be only one cylinder or at most one bank.

IMHO I would sooner have a Gen.1 with the engine work you've had done that an un-opened Gen 2.

:worship:

It's a keeper..............unless you want to sell it me

I think he means just the bearings:

Nooo... I meant just the crankshaft bearings and big end bearings! The crankshaft was fine thank goodness, can imagine a new crank would be mega ££££s

Thanks Alex, do not see the point of only having one liner, yes it would have been a fair bit cheaper but you are still left with the worry of scoring on other cylinders at some point! Just the one bank takes most of the worry away but for me the optimum engineering solution is for all cylinders to be the same!

Will be interesting to see how it feels when I pick it up, will report back :thumb:

Almost the same as my experience.
Diagnosed (mainly by myself - oil consumption and sooty left pipe etc)., did all the research and ended up at Hartech.
Very happy with the work done and the service received from Hartech and it has given me huge piece of mind.
BUT - i can't honestly say that the car feels any different to drive.... Be interested in your experience Rob and good luck for the return!

Will be great to have it back, knowing it's all tip top. I'll be interested to read what you think, through and after the running in period.

I had an exploratory chat with Grant, just to set the scene in case mine for as and when mine needs work, was very impressed with his attitude and knowledge. I would certainly send it there, though it would be a logistic pain.

I agree with the comments above. You certainly made the right choice re: Hartech, and now the car will be a keeper. Now the engine is 100% perfect, you'll have hassle-free motoring for a very long time.

Enjoy the peace of mind!
