Was taking it nice and easy in the slow lane when a stone lorry decides to shed a bunch of its stones all over the bonnet, bumper and wings. There's quite a few chips (like 50??), some light and a few a little deeper/serious.

Is the sensible thing to get the 4 panels resprayed? If so, does anyone know how much roughly it would cost, and the likelihood hood of it being as good as original? (assuming I go to a decent place!)

 [/b]

Oh man that's rubbish luck! A good place will be able to match the paint in no problem especially if they blend it in to the original paint. If it's bumper, bonnet and wings I'd expect to pay £600 ish. Mr Yates will be along soon to recommend somewhere that will do a good job for half that but around where I am we ain't so lucky.

To. Be honest that's not that bad really. I'm not sure whether to get it done now or wait until I decide to sell so the new owner gets the nice new paint work :)

I do quite a few motorway miles so I'd be super pissed if I got another stone chip after paying for the respray.... Maybe I'll consider some clear protective stuff then?

Without seeing the extent of stone chipping, it is difficult to tell what is required and how much it will cost. The only reliable way is let a couple of body shops take a look and give quotes. I'd also suggest getting a Porsche-approved bodyshop also to quote so you have the range of top and bottom prices.

For stone chips on the bonnet it is probably a back-to-metal respray with blend into wings and a front PU and mirror covers respray. Cost of materials will be broadly similar across quotes I'd guess. What will vary is how much time goes into preparation and labour rates.

I had a quote last year from an independent middle-of-the-road bodyshop (not a prestige bodyshop) for this work at £1100+VAT outside Greater Manchester and a prestige bodyshop (not Porsche-approved) at £1350+VAT. So that figure of £600 (inc VAT?) leaves me amazed. The cheapest quote I had from a local bodyshop in Cheshire was £800+VAT.

I also considered protecting the front bonnet/PU/wing tops/mirrors and needed smelling salts to recover from the prices quoted. I decided to budget for a front-end respray every 3-5 years instead. For some prestige brands, a front respray for stone chips can be £4k so protection film makes economic sense.

Crappy luck....you should have got their number ? I run a forward facing camera, for the £100 or so, i think its a no brainer

I paid £1200ish + vat for approved bodywork specialist to prep and paint my front end. Then DID NOT apply any protection and it looks just as bad as before now DOH!

My OCD could not live with as much as 50 little chips !

Goodluck, get some piccies up

Did you get a quote for the paint protection film after the respray?
My quotes for protective film came to almost the same cost as a front end respray! 12 months on, without any film, it still looks like new. But if you do a lot of miles, it may get chips in it quicker.

Edit: Not sure how you could use the camera footage to get the offending vehicle to pay up for the damage caused??? Is it a charge of insecure load, dangerous load or something else and if so, is it secured via the Police?

Cheshire

Yes that would be the sensible thing to do, but i did not get any quotes post fresh paint,,,,i have lernt my lesson ! I do drive mine in all weathers and lots of nasty roads in and around london, lots of grit and stuff

With the camera, my point was that if you captured the stones falling off the lorry and hitting the car, then you would possibly have evidence to persue via the number plate of the offending vehicle....possibly. I have seen some horrendos driving round these parts. People dont indicate any more and somf of the roundabout antics are dangerous at times ?

Film is quite expensive but I regret not fitting it now. My car is absolutely peppered with chips. Next time I will be getting film fitted straight away.

I suspect if you had dash cam footage then you could go through your Insurance whom would make a claim against the other vehicles Insurance company. You'd have to make sure you were not driving to close etc.

I don't have a dashcam running, but I should have just called them just in case. A bit gutted I didn't! Was on the way to the airport so didn't want to add any more stress, and didn't think it was that bad until I gave it a clean..

I'll get some pics up soon.

As for the £1000+vat quotes, that's what I had originally imagined, but I guess I'll just have to take it to a few different places.

Fortunately I can travel a bit around the country if it makes sense, the car often lives in Southampton, and I spend most weekends in Birmingham/Oxford so I could look at taking it somewhere close to there too.

Thanks to everyone for your inputs

I am sceptical that dashcam footage would achieve anything in this case unless the Police get interested with a dangerous or unstable load prosecution. I doubt it would be large size stones in this instance - more likely small chipping size or less in all probability. Then there is the question if sufficient distance was kept from a lorry with such a load. I saw a lorry with building site rubble on lane 1 of the M56 near Runcorn. A cross wind blew a dust of small particles off the top even though it was covered with a net onto a car in lane 2 as he was overtaking it. They would have caused some chips.
The load was secured (mesh fitted over the top) and it was probably an Act of God with a strong cross wind over that section.

As for quotes, yes, by all means ask around geographic regions.
I'd guess its going to cost you around £1200+VAT if its as bad as described.

Here's a picture of the damage.. This is up the first third of the bonnet, but fortunately not as bad on the wings.
