Question about tires

Hi all,

time has come for me to change my car's tires. I'm quite set on the Michelin's although I'm not sure whether to go for PS2 or PS4. I know that the PS4s aren't N rated, but that doesn't bother me too much as they are much newer tech tires.

What is making me unsure which model to go for is the size. I can't seem to find the PS4s in 285 for the rears. My question is:

Which would yo go for: 285 PS2s or 265 PS4s?

On a side note, I am assuming my rims will mount the 285 width, I have the Porsche Sport Design wheels. Let me know if anybody knows anything different :)

EDIT: typos

My wheels:

Might help if you post your wheel size.

Ah good point! 18" all round

Fronts: 225/40/18
Rears: 265/35/18 (currently)

They don't make ps4 in a 285/30 18.

18" tyres

255/35 R18 - 6 offers from £132.22
265/35 R18 - 6 offers from £153.58
275/35 R18 - 6 offers from £168.62
215/40 R18 - 6 offers from £126.52
225/40 R18 - 12 offers from £97.13
235/40 R18 - 6 offers from £123.94
245/40 R18 - 11 offers from £125.21
255/40 R18 - 6 offers from £167.20
225/45 R18 - 13 offers from £128.63
245/45 R18 - 6 offers from £145.81

19" tyres

255/35 R19 - 6 offers from £161.76
245/40 R19 - 5 offers from £163.55
255/40 R19 - 16 offers from £175.00
295/40 R19 - 6 offers from £204.08
265/45 R19 - 6 offers from £200.92
20" tyres

315/35 R20 - 6 offers from £322.39
275/40 R20 - 5 offers from £290.69

Thanks Alex, that's what I thought. Pity. If they did make that size I would definitely go for them but as they don't I'm unsure which to go for:

285 older PS2s or 265 newer PS4s. I just don't know if the extra width makes that much of a difference.

Stick 295 30 18 on.

I would go with the 285 PS2s.

They have been updated in the last few years and I think are at N4. They have the improved sidewalls over the original spec. I have these on my car and perform very well. Looks like your wheels will be OK for 285s.

On 18" wheels the manual states you either go for 265/35 or 285/30. The 285s are actually slightly smaller diameter in the 30 profile.

There's a strong argument to say you split the difference and go for 275/35 in a PS4. Not an official size, granted - but it's only 2% bigger circumference than a 285/30, meaning it's well within most manufacturers 3% recommended range.

Other benefits:
2% longer gearing (personally I feel the 996 could do with it on the motorway)
No impact on speedo reading
Better fuel economy (newer more fuel efficient tyre, less contact patch, longer gearing)
Fills the wheel arch better
Slightly more compliance if you're on sports suspension

It's what I'm tempted to do, the only thing stopping me is this idea that it's somehow wrong. But actually I'm of the opinion it's practically better.

Don't know where Insurance would stand on this? Technically the car would be safer on a full set of PS4s all round.

Thanks to all for the feedback. All good arguments although I'm no closer to making my mind up

I have to admit I'm tending slightly more towards the PS2s.

Bang any make 295s on. More grip, look cooler from behind and no chance of scuffing your alloys - what's not to like?

don't get me wrong. don't think i haven't considered that. I have always had an unnatural attraction to wider tires...

are there any actual drawbacks?

EDIT:
I found 295s that are N4 vs front 225s that are N3. Any cons to combining n3 fronts to n4 rears?

No, I wouldn't have any problem with this at all. I'd even consider putting PS4s on the front and PS2s on the back if you wanted to keep stock sizes.

Just go PS2s in 285/30. Still a great all round tyre.

Standard 996.1 Carrera width is 265. My car is currently wearing these, but it does look a bit under tyred.
Mk1 GT3s with the same 10" wide rear wheels wore 285/30 and so did the mk2 Carrera.

Porsche never approved a 295 width on a 10" rim on a 996.1 so why move to something not recommended when Porsche spent hundreds of thousands, if not more developing the car and it's tyres?

I'd rather go 275 than 295.
The more you increase rear width without increasing front width, the more understeer you create so again I just can't see why you'd do it. Especially when there are lots of decent tyres available in the correct size for the car.

I have a set of wheels like yours waiting to go on mine and I'll be going with 225/40 fronts and 285/30 rears, they look great, drive great and are what Porsche deemed as best for the car. :thumb:

.......or do you just reduce any over steer? Thus making the front end go first?

:?:

With the engine hanging way over the back I want those tyres as grippy as possible. If 295 wide are a no-no, why did they fit them on the 4S, Turbo, GT2, etc?
