Hi there

I'm currently in the market for a 997 GT3 .1 or .2 (not RS) and am after some clarification on what I should be looking for when viewing the ECU data regarding the 'over revs' or ignitions'.

I appreciate this type of car is likely to have seen some track time but would like some guidance on what is considered normal and conversely abnormal and also how this will show on the data.

Also if anyone knows of a car that is coming up for sale or in prep anywhere please let me know.

Many thanks

Attached should help. 997s don't record RR1s till 9000rpm which is 600pm over rev limit. Personally I'd take guidance from the OPC network which I believe allow up to RR3 without extra inspections, but someone will be along shortly to confirm. Anything over that ld want to know when it happened in engine hours believe the norm is over 50 hrs shouldn't be a problem anymore. The main issue is ther are plenty of people out there who will run for the hills if a car has RR1s so need to factor this in come resale

:yeah:

RR1 is nothing much to worry about & as Jon says, any overrevs recorded more than 50 operating hours ago can be dismissed as not having caused any damage. There are 3 ignitions recorded for every revolution of the crank so even seeing 9,000 in RR1 means 3,000 revolutions at 9K RPM, so 20 seconds. On an engine that has done 1,000 hours that's a trivial number.

Until you get beyond 10K RPM, the main risk to the internals is the shock to the chains & valve gear as this sort of overrev is always caused by a mis-shift into a low gear. That's why if the engine runs without issue for 50 hours afterwards, you can be confident that no damage has been done.

The mechanicals of the GT3 are incredibly tough and will put up with a fair amount of abuse. If you're mechanically sympathetic they exhibit almost no wear even after big mileages. I'd be more worried about the condition of the suspension & brakes personally.

Good luck with the search. Make sure any prospective car is given a thorough PPI by a GT3 specialist indie. The OPC 111 point inspection is useless imho.

Thanks for your replies gents, very helpful.

Just need to find one now that's not white!!!
