Video, 718 Cayman S - still the perfect sports car?

Like the 718 Boxster we drove a few months ago, Porsche has given the 718 Cayman a four-cylinder turbocharged engine, rather than the old, soulful six-cylinder. Does it matter as much here? Or is the four-pot really a fine replacement?

We find out, and wonder: if the 718 Cayman still is as close as you can get to being the perfect sports car, what from Porsche's huge options list would you need to tick to make it the optimum version of it

Nice review, I wish TV car shows were a bit more like that.

As for the car, not for me. 90% of the enjoyment is the sound inside the cabin.

As per review, in my opinion a massive part of these cars (boxster\cayman) characters were lost with those 2 cylinders...

Give me a 987 Cayman R anyday!

Completely agree with his views. I think pretty much everyone has said the same thing. This idea that it doesn't 35mpg is BS as well.

Spot on review that. I like Matt Prior's (that is he, yes??) style from his written journalism. The Spyder and GT4 were always going to have elements that made it into the next generation cars, but it is just soooo sad they had to drop those two little cylinders. I don't believe for one minute that the 718 will get anywhere close to 35mpg is everyday driving - in fact my guess is it will be very close to that of the outgoing model.

If I were buying a new 2 seater today it would still be this, but actually it appears that Porsche has nailed it with the new 911 GTS which (pricing aside as it is super expensive in absolute terms) might actually be the best real-world (i.e. you can buy one without being needing a special invitation) car they make now.

Engine debates aside, I found myself wondering if the older models aren't better looking.

The more I read up on the 718, the more I'm leaning to the fact that the GT4
is going to be a long term keeper. 8)

Can't imagine how good the GT4's must be, saw a fair few at Silverstone in December, they look the absolute danglies.

It's certainly a pretty car, thanks !...and it really hits all the spots, apart from
it's fuel consumption and silly high gearing. :thumb:

Oh really, how does the gearing compare to your GT3s?!

The 991 has 7 ratios and obviously it's PDK....so you're always in the meat of
the power band, and in a word the ratios are pretty much 'perfect'.

The 997 GT3 RS Gen 2 had its ratios dropped by 11% on the first four gears
to aid acceleration (over the 997 GT3 Gen 2). It makes it really quick out of
corners and added by a cup diff it's just bloody perfect !.

The GT4, let me say this..any car which can hit 82mph in 2nd is just plain
bonkers, unless it's got 500bhp per ton or has humungus torque !. It's got
plenty of torque...and will comfortably accelerate in sixth from 35 mph, it's
just a bit too high in the lower four gears.

That's interesting, what was their thinking behind that then?!

Are people doing any after market jiggery pokery to address it?'

Apart from fitting a new diff, you'd need a some major gearbox work to alter
it.

Hi Nick, just noticed your signature. Not very regular here, I have moved to A45 FL
Is the GT4 the replacement for the GT3 RS or an addition? 😁 :thumb:

No, it's an addition to the two RS's.
