Track Day Insurance?

Gentlemen (and ladies):

I am doing a CAT Training Course and hopefully, once I feel sufficiently competent, trying a track day.

Insurance for the CAT course and any track days seems to be extraordinary expensive, with a very high deductible (around 10%). What do most people do/recommend? Is it appropriate to "self insure" (ie no Insurance)?

Much appreciate your guidance.

SW

this is why i drive a £1500 quid MR2 on trackdays, if i bend it i can leave it there. i've taken my 993 on track once, uninsured as its simply not worth the hassle generally for a one off. if you are tracking it regularly, be prepared for huge excess etc

I certainly wouldn't bother with Insurance for the CatDT day.

After that, for tracking, it's your call but [with no disrespect intended to anybody else] I wouldn't bother with a car worth less than £20k given the size of the premium and the excess normally involved. Above that value ........ :dont know:

The 10% excess means that broadly speaking you are only really insuring a major or total loss. I am with T8 on this question in that unless you have an emotional level of value in the car then self insuring is generally the way to go.

That said - you should consider a road policy with track days included if you plan to spend any time on track as compared to mainstream policies that do not cover circuit use with per-event cover on top then a specialist policy generally works out cheaper after only 1 to 2 events. Use the forum search for recommendations and get some quotes in before making a decision.

Thank you very much. That is pretty much what I was expecting - it sounds like self Insurance (and slightly more gentle use of the right foot) is the way to go. No accounting for others on the track, I suppose, but imagine it may be difficult to demonstrate fault in any event.

Cheers!

I use Manning UK to insure my 993 C2 and just insured a 986 Boxster S with them too. It's normal road Insurance, but unlimited UK track days are included (with a 10% excess) as long as it's a PCGB track day, or run by a member of the ATDO - which most of the reputable track day companies are. I've always found them competitive on price too. Nice to have peace of mind if it all goes horribly wrong on track...

Agree that CAT days at Millbrook are low-risk. I've done a few of them and am comfortable without Insurance there.

Classic line give me five free track days if organised by ATDO, plus unlimited when organised by PCGB, iirc.

Another thumbs up for Manning - agreed value and a modest excess for "club" organised track days - notably NOT TVR, so they must view these are undesirable types :D

If anyone is looking for a "safe" track day, I can heartily recommend the Anglesey porsche club day - it'll be my fourth time this year in the 993. Great track, very clean - cleaner than taking it down a country lane in many cases. No damage other than tyres and some flying rubber marks to rub off. Obviously it all needs to be in good mech' order (notably brakes on this track), but it's a well controlled day and everyone is driving their P&J, so no need to go crazy and feels to me as safe as a track day can be....think I was the only 993 last year mind....https://youtu.be/JgYqM-jC1uk

i was with classicline, which as said previously includes a certain amount of track days, but they bumped the renewal premium so much that I switched to Footman James.

With Footman think it's £60 added to premium for 1 track day a year or £120 for 3...a good amount if you're just getting started. Still worked out cheaper than classicline overall, so worth investigating along with Classicline and Manning

I'm with Mannings too for UK TD's and MORIS for when we spend a few days each year on the Bugatti Circuit

Had my P&J for over 10 years so (ROW) I would always have Insurance for peace of mind - stuff happens unfortunately - even if there isn't a 964 present to be blamed!! :puh:
