Remove MF steering wheel controls

Hello all,

Have searched for an answer to this, but considering its a bit of an arse backwards question I've not found a thing!

Currently have a non-sports (triangle airbag) steering wheel with MF controls, and want to swap it over with a retrimmed wheel that doesnt have the MF controls. The retrimmed wheel is of course still the non-sports type so just need the airbag swapped over.

Is this just a straight swap, or will I encounter any problems not having the multifunction buttons plugged in?

Cheers! :D

I would suggest you drop forum member monster a PM as he has done a few of these inc. mine and I know he has just done a MF to MF gen1 to gen2 swap, and has a good knowledge of what's going on where etc. and whether you will have any issues, my gut feeling is no issues and you might need to get the OPC to turn off the MF function using their PIWIS but monster would have a much better idea than me on that. :thumb: ps he will also tell you the correct torque settings for reattaching the steering wheel

I have never done the exact change you are describing, but I would go with what phil is suggesting - I don't think you will have any problems at all, and the worse case scenario is as Phil suggests that you may need to have the multifunction option turned off with PIWIS - but I would guess not.

They are very easy to swap between so just try it and see - don't forget to disconnect your battery before popping the airbag out and disconnecting it!

Thanks for the replies both

Am still looking into the various options, and was asking this question as I was going to buy a second wheel and get it re-trimmed in alcantara. Having had a couple of quotes in the last few days though, it might turn out cheaper to just buy an OEM wheel!

Would you guys happen to know if p/n 99734780403 is a non-sports wheel? Pictures look as though it's the triangle type. I see this wheel on Teile.com, but was it ever an option to have a non-sports alcantara trimmed wheel on a 997 or Cayman?

I think I'd prefer to get something OEM rather than retrimmed, but am I looking for something that doesn't exist and the one for sale above is just a retrimmed wheel with a made up part number?

Apologies for all the questions, but you two sound like you know what you're talking about :D

Ok to try and answer some questions

first there is this wheel on ebay and it's as you were originally thinking

I am pretty sure they didn't do the triangle wheel in Alc as OE it was the round sports wheel, but for you to do that you would need a round airbag and that's £350 plus the wheel £699 and it starts to get pricey.

To retrim yours have you tried Linas at DesignLS he's a good guy with excellent skills

or
Royal steering wheels , they are highly rated on the forum by members.

or if you wanted to stay OE and keep your airbag but have something a bit different then there's this

Let us know if you have any more questions :thumb:
