Torn between late 996 and early 997

Not sure which way to go !
Prices are very similar

My local Specialists says late 996 2003/4 doesn't have bore score issues - just RMS/IMS

That goes against everything else I've read

Opinions ?

Chris

As mileage increases bore scoring to some degree is somewhat inevitable and the 996 and 997 3,6 engines are equally prone. It's the 3.8 engine in the 'S' that is even more susceptible to this.

RMS isn't a biggie but sadly the IMS can be. Read up on all you can about potential IMS bearing issues.

I'm a big fan of the 996 Carrera but with a budget big enough to get me into a 997 I'd probably plump for the later car - unless the right 996C4S came along.

Happy Hunting. :thumb:

I responded on the 996 sub-forum - and said 997 so I'll get :gunfire:

I suspect he isn't really a specialist.

997.

And early 997's do score bores.

You need to change your "specialist".

All 3.6 and 3.8 M96/M97 engined cars are at risk of bore scoring.

As stated above, he's no specialist.

997 is just a face-lifted 996 with a higher-quality (but bland, to me) interior.

Try them both in all sorts of guises; they're different but both great.

My personal favourites are the low-end Carreras; light, nimble and sound great (with PSE a must). However, I don't know of a dud 996 or 997 model.

Buy the one with the best condition (and history) you can find and enjoy!

The one least likely to get bore score is a 997.1 3.6 manual.
My indy says 3.6 997's don't get bore score . Don't is a strong word but I agree less likely and very few recorded cases. The manual again less likely than the tip. a 06 or some late 05 have the newer IMS bearing the engine numbers pre and post are avail in my garage just click on my car and scroll down. I say go 997.1 3.6 man with as many options as you can get but don't let spec put you off as 99% of things can easily be retro fitted.
If you can find a 997 with X51powerkit within budget grab that as they don't have any of the ims or bore score and they are dam quick :thumb:  otherwise an 06 997.1 3.6 manual

996 but I'm biased ; )

The 997 interior doesn't do anything for me, it's very Golf like or something, the 996 interior has more of the Porsche feel to it, albeit a bit cheaper looking, but as said more character.

The 997 will of course be newer and I personally much prefer the styling. Those 996 headlamps have never done it for me! :what:

+1 997 looks newer :)

997.1 3.6 engine with manual transmission & as low mileage as possible with lots of receipts and FSH. Think that about sums it up.

Don't skimp or not get the car of choice in for a pre inspection. This is the best advice on any second hand Porsche. :thumb:

Would be nice if it were true, but X51 doesn't mitigate either of those issues.

As the owner of a 996T, I'm going with early 997.

Much better looking car IMO.

When my 996 was in for a service my specialist mentioned that in his opinion the difference in build quality and materials was noticeable between the 986 & 987, and the 996 & 997. He cited things like the quality of steel for springs and hardware, and the use of push fit connectors for the cooling system on the x87.

But frankly if you find a good example of both it will depend which you prefer. Either can bite you but both will reward you. I bought a 996.1!

996 looks like a Boxster.

It's the only thing I don't like about it.

Everything else is wow! :D

Although because it looks like a Boxster it is better value lol...
