I can't actually see how the tool in the photo fits onto a wheel nut!

Can you not buy it from OPC? Or is that a daft question?
More daft is to ask"does it not come supplied with the car?" Or maybe they are not to be undone by anyone other than specialists?

That tool in the link is for setting the saftey locker inside the nut, you dont need one as a half inch ext bar works fine, or indeed a wiggle with your finger!

The tool to fit the nut ( its a bolt actually..) is in the boot. This is 997 but 991 is virtually the same mechanism.

ETA, you will also need a suitable torque wrench...!

And a torque multiplier presumably as I think it needs around 390ftlbs of torque.

Depends on the torque wrench but yes, its an option.

I'll enquire from OPC today but presumed their might be a decent alternative without paying OPC 'pants down' prices!

And I called the supplying dealer only to be advised the car isn't supplied with one! Ridiculous!

Nut removal tool is £189 off Porsche Shop.

Also need a torque multiplier or extra long torque wrench. Our wrenches at work for up to 1000Nm are over 4 feet long.

Think there is a recommended tightening sequence :-
Step 1. Tighten nut to 600Nm
Step 2. Loosen nut by 1/6th turn
Step 3. Re-tighten nut to 600Nm

There is only one nut per wheel to rely upon, so the utmost care must be taken. There is also a locking pin which MUST be engaged correctly into the centre bolt otherwise problems will arise.

A further note about that tool is that you can get one just like it from Manthey for a similarly opulent amount of Euros, however when they were doing a quick radiator change for me last year, their mechanics just use a half inch socket extension like we all do... :thumb:

I can only speak from my 997 GTS experience
997 GTS came with a socket which fitted over the Centre lock which you then either used a torque multiplier or a 700nm torque wrench with
I bought a 700 nam torque wrench for a shade less than £300 which I ve used a couple of times with no problem

The socket for the wheel nut should certainly be in the car (on the 997 it is behind a small panel at the bottom of the front boot - I'd expect a similar arrangement with the 991). If it is missing then you will need to hop in a pram and throw some toys as they charge >£200 for a replacement IIRC.

There is another tool for centre locks which doesn't come with the car. This rather phallic item is basically a glorified guide pin to help you line the wheel up, so if you are careful you really don't need it (and few bother acquiring one). This is as well, as they charge even more for that than they do the socket (though there are aftermarket alternatives for that one).

As for something to use with the socket though - no other car that I could name currently comes with a torque wrench to put the wheels on with, so why would anyone expect a GT3 to come with a tool that no other Porsche includes?

[Footnote - the McLaren F1 came with one and so did one of the Spykers IIRC, but I don't know of anything currently on the market which includes one. Not a surprise really given that it doesn't really fit in the car. Even a torque multiplier, torque wrench and breaker bar combination eats tangibly into boot space]
