First time Porsche buyer, Boxter 2.7 987, is it worth PPI

Depends how confident you are in your own ability to check the basics out on a used car. Ive had about 6 boxsters over the years never ppi any of them and never had any issues. Its just a car, paperwork check, brakes, suspension, clutch, bodywork etc, no inspection is going to tell you if the ims bearing is going to go and there are no bore score issues on the 2.7. Good luck whatever you decide.

You've got to love Autotrader, your car has two seats! Glad they listed that.

Get a PPI if you don't know enough to be able to check it yourself to your own satisfaction. If the car comes with a warranty (even if it's a 30 day one, collect it and book it in with a Porsche dealership for a free health check. Then if they find anything return it to the place you bought it from.

Good luck and good car to buy, you'll have a lot of fun it during the summer. I own a Boxster as well and they are great cars.

Yeah I've asked for 6 months at their highest cover, (£2,500). I know that doesnt cover the cost of an engine rebuild.

The advisories on the last MOT were for a slight coolant leak and suspension arm slight play.

Other than those the condition of the car was very good. Do you think those items are likely to cause me any financial heartache?

The coolant leak will if you don't get it fixed asap.

A PPI is always wise reassurance
If the dealer won't let you have it done before you buy
Take it straight there after collection
For £220 if there's nothing wrong you'll sleep easier
If they find something wrong the dealer doesn't have any excuse not to fix a problem

Costs of Porsche repairs are higher than 'regular' cars. That's just how it is. Make sure everything is sorted before you collect.

The price of £2500 for six months of what cover exactly?

It hugely depends if you can do your own spanners TBH.

£2.5k of cover is not a lot if you can't.

As for the issues you mention - coolant leak could be anything from new header tank cap to knackered radiator(s) or coolant hoses.

Suspension arm play may involve any number of issues including a replacement of the offending part(s) followed by a geometry check.

As Isyman said - make sure these are properly sorted before you take delivery.

I don't even own a set of spanners

I'm really passionate and very keen to learn and would love to do things on my own. What would be the best way to learn or am I being naive and doesn't work like that?! For example it should be relatively easy to diagnose where the coolant leak is coming from so if it's accessible I should be able to fix it right?

Of course for the bigger jobs I'll have to pay for an expert.

I would say you need someone who knows what they are doing to fix the coolant leak, if u dont even own any spanners i suggest take it to a specialist

Forget the spanner set, you're not buying it from an Auction, it's a car dealer. Here's what to do: If you want any Porsche buy from Porsche, it's the best advice. If you buy away from Porsche get it into an independent specialist for a report. Understand Porsche are not cheap fixes when they need attention. Build a contract with the dealer that you want any notifications amended prior to being delivered. If they won't, the they give you the money back for the inspection. If nothing is noted on inspection then say you'll honour the cost. Which is a very fair route by both parties, see how well the dealership reacts to this initiative. After all I bet they've said the car is perfect and well maintained and the previous owner looked after it no expense spared (the salesman script) . Keep us updated :thumb:
Ps you'll absolutely enjoy the Boxster, it's a fantastic car to own & drive.
