I'm actively looking at trading up from a 987 Cayman S to a 981 Boxster S

The car I'm interested in is from a main dealership.
They looked at my car in the flesh and instantly offered me a price which they then said is negotiable, TBH it wasnt a bad offer and he said it could be a bit more. (I suppose it depends on me buying the car that they are selling).

What I'm not sure about is how much less a dealer would be offering as opposed to a private sale. He said that as my car has an aftermarket (Carnewals exhaust), they could not put a Porsche warranty on it, even though in his own words the car looked pretty mint. Does this mean that he is offering me a trade/auction price?

He said the spec and colour make mine a desirable model that would sell easily.

I'm getting tempted to offer it for sale privately but tbh I don't like the hassle of advertising etc. do people think there is likely to be much of a difference in trade and private sale prices.

He has offered minimum 26k, does that mean that 30k is achievable as a private sale?

Edit: car is 2010 Cayman S
Basalt with black interior.
PASM, PDK, PCM3, Sports plus and chrono, Carnewals GT Exhaust, Black 19" wheels (lepsons coated them)
Front covered in Armor fend.
29k miles.

May be worth calling some indi dealers to see how much they would give straight cash or the ones that offer Sale of Return...

If you need to sell it to finance the new one, then you may not have time for SOR - so just take straight cash.

But you don't have to go to the dealer where you are buying from - it gives you a base price, usually indies will offer you more.

Give them a call.

But then going to the dealer where you are buying from takes out all the hassle.

A Porsche specialist will know the Porsche market better than 'the trade' so will generally offer more than 'the 'book price'.

Selling privately should net you more cash but you'll have the hassle of advertising it and entertaining tyre-kickers/joy riders and may still get several trade bids before a sensible one comes along.

Hmmm... decisions, I think I'm confusing myself to a certain degree here.
Maybe I just need to haggle a bit harder with the dealership and see if I can reduce the gap between my car and the new one.

The 26k offer matches an offer that 2 indies have offered over the phone, one even said bring it down and I will write a cheque out on the spot subject to it being what you say it is, which it is of course.

I suppose the dealers have to look at selling at least 5k more than they pay for it, to cover VAT, forecourt costs etc. Business is business.

:yeah:

That looks great.

Another way to go is Sale or Return with a reputable dealer. I did that with my last car and ended up with somewhere between the private sale price and the dealer offers, which was well worth it for not having to put up the hassle of private selling.

Pretty buoyant market at the moment and dealers are struggling for stock- i'm sure some dealers will be interested, especially with a nice car like yours.

Its a great looking car , one option sell to indie and haggle for better deal from OPC as no px

Much depends ob how strong your desire is for the car you have seen at the said dealer. Taking tine on SOR or another dealer/indy or private sale may lose you the car you are wanting to buy.

deal is done - i was offered a good deal on my new ride so i bit the bullet and went for it.
i managed to negotiate 12% discount off of a 65K car that has not been registered yet so hey ho and here we go.

Well done :thumb: I also prefer to trade in than be messed about selling privately or dealing with SOR where by you end up being hit with the dealers advertising and storage costs plus 10-15% commission if sold.

On trading a newer model car, a trade in deal as you have experienced always presents a greater negotiation against the car you wish to buy especially if buying new.

I'd never sell private again as I have no time for dealing with idiots from past experience.

It depends where you do your SoR. The above is the highest I've ever heard of. 10-15% 'all in' is more typical.

I dont think there's a lot of money around at the moment or most buyers shelling out near £30k have a px judging by interest in what I'm offering at the moment as I'm not ready to buy yet.

OPC will usually have an £8k mark up if they're going to resell the px :what:

Some dealers are outright bandits. A Merc dealership wanted to offer me less than what I could get from webuyanycar :bandit: and contray to what I thought about MB Dealerships it resembled more Athur Daley salemanship in wide-awake suits and anoraks :nooo:

Great news!
New car smell.......hmmmmmmm :p

Id have been a bit surprised if they marketed my px with an 8k mark up, they paid me 26k for it and it was a lovely car but similar examples were around the 30k mark with reputable dealerships or did you mean if they intended to resell and not pass on to the trade, in which case I suppose thay may have managed around 29k on a good day :?:

What car are you considering not buying yet then :?:
