Do I buy a 2009 Facelift Cayenne?

Hi all,

I have a 911 daily and smitten with it, so impressed with the Porsche brand and my local OPC etc. Its time to upgrade the wifes / family car. She really wants a Q7 "or similar". Well shes not getting a Q7 with all the bad press surrounding them!

So I showed her a picture of a 2009 facelift Cayenne 3.0 TDI. She really liked it!

So my question is this, is there anything to look out for? Ive had a quick google and nothing really jumps out at me - just looks like a good honest work horse (not that ill ever really go off road mind you), and £20k for a 09 on 80k miles seems about right.

Many thanks in advance,

Andy

We had a Cayenne and a Q7, both sub 60k miles very similar to drive although the 4.2tdi Q7 was much quicker than the non-turbo Cayenne and felt a more solid car, very wide and a nightmare in car parks if you actually want to be able to open the door to get out of the car.
The Cayenne surprisingly can't really accommodate much more in the boot than your average hatchback due to the slope of the tailgate, whilst the Q7 has a pretty huge boot.
We had no problems with the Q7 whatsoever whilst the Cayenne had ABS failure, electric tailgate strut failure and air suspension failure, ABS unit was nearly £2.5k to replace, rear tailgate struts £400 and air suspension release valves were £1800, so if looking at higher mileage lower priced cars just be aware that they can be painfully expensive to repair if something gives up on you.
Whilst my 996 cost me nothing but servicing costs and tyres in 3 years of ownership

Arrrrrr *****, so the joys of running the 996 is worlds apart from the Cayenne then!

Very interesting you've had both cars. So you'd recommend the Q7 anyday then. Is there anything wildly to look out for, I know they chew tyres but are they really as bad as the press?

Thanks

Andy

although we've been running an 09 TDI cayenne for the last 4 years and apart from an expect drive train issue that was covered under warranty, it hasn't missed a beat, air suspension included

the way it drives is like no other, more like hot hatchback than 4x4 and for that reason it is the best drivers car by a mile

As stated above the Q7 had the bigger boot and could accommodate our daughters "smart-trike", whilst it would only fit in the cayenne partially dismantled. Running costs there's probably not much in it, both are big heavy cars so are hard on the tyres and brakes and are not economical on fuel compared to a hatchback etc, but you accept that when you buy them.
Don't be fooled by the air suspension and sporty settings, neither car would win awards for sporty handling compared to a 911 or boxster etc.
I'd recommend driving both with similar spec's and see which you prefer.
If I was looking to buy another I'd probably go for the same 4.2tdi Q7, as the 4.2tdi Cayenne is still commanding £45k upwards.
The 3.0 tdi Q7 is the better engine according to my local Audi specialist.
Running a big Audi makes you realise that Porsche ownership can actually be quite cheap in comparison.

I've yet to see a 2009+ diesel for £20k even with 100k+ miles so if you can get one for £20k and 80k miles its a bargain, the wrong colour or there's something wrong with it.

High miles puts a lot of but it shouldn't. There have been some hanging around for months with 100k+ miles but they're still c£26k/

I've got a 2012 3.0D with plenty of extras including air suspension. It does not drive like a 4x4 and you can sense it has been built from a performance chassis focus especially when the 'Sport' button is pressed and it hankers down low.

I get the sport concept but personally I find the gearbox a bit jerky in the low gears when in slow moving traffic and the retardation you get when it selects a low gear ready for the off. At it's last major service I had the software reflashed to clear the memory of the previous driver and it has sort of inproved it.

They are very very spec and colour combo dependant (a brown dash in a black/tan car - really!) in terms of forward sale - so get the right options or commit to a low value down the line. How somebody can order these cars with heated seats is beyond me but there are some out there. Dont go above 20" wheels unless you have air and avoid any with 22" as they didn't offer that size.

For some reason the trip average mpg for the last 3.5k miles I've driven it shows 42.2mpg

So........................I took it out today and decided to spend some time with the 'Sport' button deployed - doing 50mph the gear change drops from 8 to 6 and the suspension swithes to 'Sport' setting and drops a level in line with MC Hammer's trouser crotch.

I'm still trying to work out how this 2T vehicle can go so fast as it handles a motorway entry slip sweeping bend holding the road like shoite to a blanket :floor:

Plus I'm on 800 miles from the last tank fill up :what:

Yep I meant to say WITH heated seats  They can melt cheese :what:

I ended up with a heated screen but dont like the wire in it and having a choice getting a heated steering wheel is a definite winner :thumb:

I borrowed a Cayenne S for a week and a disco 4 for a week ,
We had snow at the time and apart from speed , the disco won hands down in every other way ,
So I bought a disco

There is no way I would buy a car with a heated steering wheel.

They are only for pufters.
