Thankfully not the 993 :)
Went to Blyton yesterday with the little mr2 I bought for winter trackdays, to save me being tempted to do one in the 993. Proved to be a wise decision as I put it sideways onto a very wet painted kerb on the outside of a bend and carefully thumped the armco at the chicane chasing my friend in his Ginetta race car!
I've already unbolted and removed the rear wing bumper and rear light which were all smashed and sourced replacement parts for the grand sum of 125 quid.
I'd shudder to think of how much the same minor off would have been in a 993!
There was a brave guy in a white GT3 porsche out there yesterday but he was being ultra careful in the fast bends.
it's a reminder of how quickly things can go wrong when pushing too hard!
No harm done and managed to finish the trackday before going home to pull bits off it.

MR2

Is that a Mk1 MR2?

no its a n/a roadster, all the panels bolt on thankfully, its ideal as long as you dont bend the chassis. its a lot of fun on track and on the road, particularly while the 993 is tucked up for winter.

this is before and after stripping. took 2 hrs.

This looks like a really easy car to work on, with the benefit that they probably don't rust like the MK1's !!!

I dread to think how difficult and expensive that would have been on the 993! Think I would want a roll cage in the MR2 mind, wouldn't fancy being upside down at 100mph around a track!!!!!

If you ever decide you are into MK1's, let me know, as a mate of mine breaks them and has around 70 breaking.

Ouch, but I suppose that's the good thing about having a cheap track toy!

I saw a 991 GT3 at Bedford this weekend, he was also taking it very easy... to the point where Clios were all queueing up behind. It did sound glorious blasting down the straights though, and very very quick in a straight line!

the advantage of the mr2 roadster is the panels and parts availability. its so cheap. a full set of discs and pads 54 quid. its only 140bhp and 990kg so its not mega quick but its as fun as the 993 down country lanes and probably not slower in those situations when value isnt a worry! :)
ive a hard top generally, but maybe i will put a cage in and strip it, not sure. it stands me at £2.5k or so all up and ready for track. it was all over the GT3 in bends in the damp and wet, a real fun day out. best session of the day was swapping position with a Clio cup car and having a good 10min flat out run.

Just done the usual fleebay check, they really are cheap as chips aren't they!!
Never done the track thing, but should do, as Pembrey isn't too far away from me :thumb:
Looks like you have found a perfectly affordable track car, only other thing that could match this for fun vs value could be a Type R maybe? :driving: :D

you need a facelift car (after 2003) and they can burn a little oil. service history is needed, but cheap servicing as long as regular oil changes.
panels all unbolt with a dozen bolts or screw fasteners. you can pick up virtually anything for them second hand, or eurocar parts new.

standard brakes are fine on track. alignment is critical, or they can be twitchy. tyres are cheap, literally there is no downside unless you want one for the shopping trip, there is literally no storage space whatsoever in them apart from the "frunk" which is smaller than the 993 and 2 cubby holes behind the seats for your packed lunch.

i got a de-cat manifold for 80 quid, as the pre cats can break up and its safer to remove. ive fitted a chassis under body brace (£120) for trackday use, just to make it a little firmer. i was offered a set of coilovers for 280 quid as new this week so might get them.

oh and a smaller steering wheel helps as the original is a bit bus like.

so far, there is no better rwd trackday hack i can think of, its even got a 6 speed box and lsd. mine was thrashed remorselessly on track and never missed a beat. and if its written off i'll get the bus home! :)

its been quite rewarding for me as i used to trailer a 50k track car and worry about piling it up. i now drive to and from and have a buzz doing so.
on the lanes its quite a brilliant drive, more than quick enough. i'm having another if this one goes pop!

I had the 1600 square back an then in 1990 the 2.0 GTi version. You're spot on about the early ones being a rust bucket. I finally let it go on Fleebay a few months ago & the guy that bought it off me at auction was chuffed to bits when he came with trailer in toe. He explained all he wanted was it for tracking and they are the bees knees for lb for £ pure fun.

Hi

I had a new MR2 Mk1 T bar back in the day and loved it. What would a decent one cost these days?

I had never considered the 3rd Gen cars before, but I might have a look at one as a station car/runaround when I get back to the UK.

All the best

Berni

Very unusual for a rear qtr to be a bolt on panel. How brilliant for a track day car.

I was offered an accident damaged one on an 04 plate for £1k as it was registered but literally needed all the panels replacing that's all. Stripped out maybe 800-850kg would be fun on track! Even immaculate fsh cars can be had for 3k or so. There's a big community for them and breakers with loads of spares. The 190 bhp Celica /Elise engine swap is popular and I might buy an already converted car next as they fetch peanuts. Saying that it will soon be time to dust off my beautiful 993 which I'm missing badly.

Was it this one and is that you behind?

That is a friend of mine. He said it took it easy because it was wet and it was his first track day in it since he changed from his 996 Turbo. But he had a great time.

Glad your MR2 is easily fixed and no one was hurt.
