Anyone here considering the new Focus RS as a Daily Driver?

So, I've been following the development of the new Focus RS on youtube and have read up a lot on the car, and I think it has real potential. A lot of work (and re-work) has gone into getting the characteristics of the car just right, and much of the 'focus' has been poured into the 'rear drive' aspects of the drive train. I'm not usually a big fan of AWD hot hatches that are primarily FWD until traction is compromised, but with 'Drift Mode' activated, much more drive goes to the rear in the Focus RS which could make it a real hoot. Anyway, I'm going to test drive one in a couple of months as I'm up for a DD and this is on my shortlist along with an M135i and A45AMG.

Any other thoughts?

In simple terms - No, never.

Whilst all the techno blurb makes it sound promising it will never shake off it's history and the image that it's market genre seems to attract.

I had a new Focus ST as a loan car for a day back end of last year - felt very 'cheap' and all the noise from the engine has a significant amount of 'synthetic addition' from the car's stereo to make it sound....................faster?.....

I have a real soft spot for the Ford RS brand but they always seem to have rivals that manage to pip them as the more desirable or accomplished. You mention the beemer and merc but if it was my money it would still be on the generally accepted best in this particular segment, the golf R...

I am tempted. Its probably going to be a weapon. Imagine that as a DD. I went for a Golf R, but only coz this wasn't available then. Go for it. 8)

The Golf R is an excellent all rounder... I bought one new a few years back, but ended up selling it after 10 months as it was just a bit dull. Very accomplished and very well built but just lacked some attitude.
Anywho, I'll drive the RS and see if it has that X factor, if not I think an M135i might suit me for darting around the back streets...

I saw the PH article on Wednesday, watched too many YouTube videos on the development, placed an order today! For £33k, ALL options minus a sunroof, I couldn't say no. If it's *****, I'll probably be able to sell it for what I paid, or as a mate did with the Mk2 RS, sold for a £4k premium after putting 2k miles on it.
I simply want to get it on track and play with the drift mode round the local course, looks like a lot of fun if you can get over snobbery. I never thought I would order a new Ford but I just felt magnetised to this.

Strangely, I should love Fords, I've got a work horse Focus TDCI which I've had since new, has 170k on it now, never failed, unlike these unreliable German brands. Also had a lot of fun with a Mk1 Focus RS which was tuned to 380BHP, destroyed a lot of cars on track days and it used to draw a crowd in the pits. Miss the yobish-ness in a car these days, RS always delivers that.

I think you should be OK. Some dealers are already advertising upcoming RS's for 39,995 which is already 8-10k over the RRP.

I bought a MK2 RS (UG) 6 years ago and just sold it to a dealer for £19k.
Insurance was £200 a year, and most expensive service was £295.
A reverse sensor failed after 6 years. No other issues.
Will have a 911 one day, but about to order a mk3.
All wheel drive and no diff in the rear axle, it uses 2 x 7 plate clutch packs instead, as in the Evoque. GKN Twinster.
It's going to be good.

My taste barometer would go off the scale.

The missus once asked when driving behind one, what the hell has he done to that car it looks stupid, I had to explain it came from the factory that way. If you look like Eddie the Eagle it may get you girls, as long as the glass in their glasses was as thick as his.

Loved the mk1, have always wanted one. Hated the mk2 looked ridiculous. I think they have found the balance with this one. Just would rather it was a three door. Not very popular with the Ford crowd because it's a five door neither has the latest ST for same reason.

I've always been a fast ford fan. It takes me back to my youth. Had a few hot Fords back then, including a mk2 Escort Mexico, a mk2 Escort RS1800 (extremely rare) and a mk3 Escort RS1600i.

I have considered a new RS now they've toned it down and it's back to being awd. Go for it if it makes you happy. Sure it will be a great car.

>£30k for a hatchback that is expected to depreciate fairly significantly in the medium term and which apparently doesn't even have much boot space for its class... Wouldn't even contemplate it to be honest. No matter how good it may be, it is still a Focus. If I did want a midsize hatchback with a bit of urgency (which I don't), I'd probably be looking at the SEAT (which is essentially a cheap Golf R minus the 4wd system).

I have owned some classic Ford RS models at least 6 mk2 RS 2000, 2 mk 2 Mexico, mk 1 mex RS 2, RS Tubo,s 1 & 2 and the best of the lot which was a hoot ( dangerous) was a 2 wd Sapphire Cosworth which was mapped with some other bits and bobs and would go sideways in an instant.
After the MK 1 Focus RS which drop to bits I really do not get off on the newer offerings.
I will always remember a gadgy in a 993 thinking he would blow away the Sapphire on the M6 early one Sunday morning, I had to back off as he accelerated as it would have ran into the back of his car when following he eventually realised at well into 3 figures that his car was not as quick as he thought and the old Sapphire stormed past, it was a quick thing but could very easily have killed you
