Specialist or normal insurer?

I hope you chaps don't mind me bombarding you with questions but this is just a quickie - when it comes to Insurance, do you particularly go for specialist Insurance? I've been given fantastic quotes by Axa and Hastings Direct both fairly well known insurers, is it worth spending an afternoon ringing round specialists? I'm not sure they will beat these two quotes and for the sake of the odd £20 I may save, I don't think I can really be bothered unless there are major benefits to be had.

2 schools of thought here... pay more and go with a specialist in the hope that they will be more accepting of the 'agreed' value of the car, will be better set up to facilitate repairs by the garage of your choice (although all have to offer this), may provide other benefits too.

Or, just go for the cheapest quote and hope for the best (which is what I do!) on the basis that all Insurance companies are cheats of varying degree.

I used confused.com for years and weighed up who I went with based on price and brand reputation, which usually meant Admiral, Esure or Privilege. Their policies are fine, but you may think the features and cover that a specialist can provide is valuable to you, so it's worth finding out IMO.

I contacted a few of the specialists people on here tend to use such as Classicline, AIB, Bridle, Mannings UK etc and its clear that that the policies are different (as Robertb says). They can include agreed value, choice of repairer, euro breakdown, full comp when driving another car, track cover, plus other smaller things you may value. they will usually cost more, but they may represent better value for money, maybe not, only you can judge that.

I'm with AIB/Hiscox for my C4S and wife's Volvo V60 for £785, it comes with the things mentioned above (except the track cover) and I saw that as better value for money compared to Admiral multicar for around £600.

My latest policy is with Tesco - around 300 sheets for me and the bird. I've always just gone with the cheapest (and lowest excess). They're all a set a Charlatans!

For whatever reason Admiral are always the cheapest for me. Their cover probably isn't the best but I don't drive that much and like to think that I'm an above average driver!

Just renewed the multicar this year - £1150 for the 911 and an M5. AIB/Hiscox were £1500 with great benefits as described but just weren't worth it for me. Other "specialists" like Flux, Sky, Mannings, Classicline didn't get close or refused to quote altogether. Hoping that changed next year when I hit a significant birthday! :)

21st?

Right rang a couple of specialist insurers - £971 was the best I got  Only problem is apparently I can't use my no-claims as I'm already using it on my Corrado so that's pushed the premium up to £395 with breakdown or £365 without. I'm thinking of joining the ADAC though as their cover is supposed to be excellent. That's such a con - if I haven't made a claim, I haven't made a claim!

I do agree they are all shysters - had a massive issue with Lancaster over their policy which almost ended with me taking them to court before they backed down

I went for the cheapest as provided by comparethemarket.com which turned out to be Admiral for around £400 fc me and Mrs. Also got a free meerkat doll 😃

I also have 4 year RTI policy for £150ish to cover any shortfall in insurers value estimate if the worst was to happen and I lost the 911.

I have been with specialists insurers for years, generally because my cars have been modified. The C4S is stock so have now gone with Axa, as was £140 cheaper than classic line. You do get more 'stuff' with the specialists, but I didn't want most of it anyway. Plus you have to be careful with agreed values, as the amount you agree is the max amount you get, not market value. So if prices go up and you haven't upped your value you may not be able to replace your p&j with like for like if the worse should happen :nooo:

I'm also with ADAC, although not sure you can still get new membership using a UK address. Shame.

Max NCD / Churchills

Got 3 point and now being robbed for £270pa :)

Porsche 911 - the accountants choice :)

Yes this idea that no claims can only be used on one car is stupid. It's just another way of getting the most from us possible. I have had two cars for so long I have two sets of no claims but it's very annoying that I have to do that.

CAR Insurance IS THE BIGGEST SCAM GOING!!!

Had an absolute nightmare trying to get insured yesterday. Long story short - can't use your no claims on more than one car, can't mirror it because apparently I don't have enough experience driving performance vehicles (Corrado VR6, Golf GTIs, Audi Quattro and various other modded cars and assorted American muscle cars not to mention the Scania R500 aren't deemed powerful enough apparently) so ended up having to cancel the Insurance on my Corrado to use the no claims then all the £300ish quotes I'd been given on confused/moneysupermarket etc shot up when I tried to pay. Axa turned out the cheapest in the end at £638. Hastings quoted £327 on confused then shot to a very reasonable £2637 when I tried to pay!!!

Absolutely ridiculous

*ps - apologies to the mod that moved this - I did look for an Insurance section and thought it strange there wasn't one, God knows how I missed it!

Did you call Adrian Flux? I have a heavily modified 997 Turbo with them (and now my Boxster). The 911 was a very good price considering what I've done to it.

Yeah tried Flux - that's who my Corrado was insured with. Couldn't get anywhere near a decent quote unfortunately because the girl that I spoke to was really, really helpful.
