At least what Road & Track magazine is saying:

Porsche Will Build a GT3-Powered, Manual-Only 911 R
Could this be the ultimate 911?

When Porsche released the 911 GT3, it received endless flack from people because a manual gearbox wasn't even an option. Porsche's reasoning was that the car was faster without the manual gearbox, and since it's a track car, the speed is what matters.

But with the introduction of the Cayman GT4, Porsche obviously saw that there is a market for a limited production performance car with a manual gearbox as the only option. And the good news is that it's going to happen again.

Someone familiar with the inner workings at Stuttgart has told Road & Track that there will indeed be a limited production (Update: A source tells us Porsche will build 600 of these cars, total), manual-only 911 powered by the 3.8 liter engine from the 911 GT3. It'll be called the 911 R.

Our source tells us that the car, which is a tribute to the original 911 R, will have no wing, will be lightened, and will have less tire than the 911 GT3. Think about it as a 911 GTS that's even more betterer.

Rumors also say that the car is totally sold out, which may or may not be true. We're told that a number of dealers still haven't even heard about the car, but that might be because the cars have been exclusively offered to Porsche's preferred program, which are people that own 918s or have multiple cars, your VIP buyers, if you will.

Sounds fun. Doesn't seem like a mainstream model though - a shame no one will be able to buy one

What the hell is going on at Porsche? We get a race GT4 with a road designation "Clubsport" and now an endurance race designation "R" supposedly being applied to a road car.

I'm guessing a final edition Type 991 RS with even more power will emerge as the RSR.....!

Given that the diesel fiasco has prompted VW to review all non-essential vanity projects group wide - even if this was on the table it still might not see the light of day. [When the 991 GT3 came out, Andreas P said that the reason for no manual option was that they would have to spend loads of money to make the engine and rear steer play nice with the GT3 engine. Why would they suddenly make that spend now that the parent group is in the **** with debilitating lawsuits on the horizon?]

Move along...Nothing to see here... :nooo:

Or will it be a parts bin special like the sports classic and remove the rear seats/hike up the power

I agree with Kingston (for once), Porsche need to do something with all those unsold manual transmissions for instance. Currently on the Porsche site there's 161 pdk 991's for sale but only 10 manual 991's. Must be lots of stuff floating around despite any fancy JIT manufacturing methods they may be using

Greetings . The 911 r is coming . It has not been scrapped . It is a more powerful ( note I don't necessarily say gt3 engined although that's the most likely option ) car . It will be manual , at first there was talk of extreme hard core ness with even talk of one seat (!). That has been laid to bed though .
It seems this is a manual , lighter , more bespoke 911/ gt3 , available only in manual with an emphasis on fun and interaction rather than outright track pace . Expect less aero and grip , no rws , bespoke interior and exterior bits and a very Spartan but not race car like interior as standard with many comforts able to be added back as no cost options . The car will be very limited in number ( uk allocation between "under 20" and 40 cars ) and cost "much more" than the gt3 . It will be like an even more special sport classic / run out model . However don't be surprised if something very similar isn't bought out later with higher production numbers ( like the GTS was to the sport classic ).
Hope this helps , wt

Is there any more detail on this? Very few details other than whats already been posted.

Rumoured approx 240k Euros in Germany

I love the idea of it, understated and more of a wolf in sheep's clothing. There is no doubt the modern and most recent RS cars phenomenal but it the road test reports are to be believed, its a race car.

If the R goes some way to the original concept and retains a de-tuned version of the engine in the GT3 RS but with more bias towards a road car then it should be fantastic. Less is more.

I also hope that they make a reasonable number in RHD cars for the UK market and they spread them evenly among the dealerships and not all placed across the world into the hands of wealthy collectors.

Maxie that article is July 2015?

I'm interested in knowing more about this R though, if it happens

The story from the sales director at my OPC is there will be just one car per dealership. Each one will no doubt go to the biggest customer that they have.

Porsche 911 Product Director August Achleitner has revealed the highly-anticipated 911 R will be unveiled shortly.
We asked about the upcoming model, Achleitner told Motoring 'Come to Geneva and you'll find out, but for now this is all I can talk about."
Despite this subtle hint, Achleitner conceded 911 R production will be severely limited. However, he refused to confirm rumors that the company is only planning to build 600 units and all of them have already been spoken for.
Porsche has been tight-lipped about the model but it is expected to be based on the 911 GT3 and be a high-performance road car that appeals to purists. Give its mission, the model will come sparely equipped in order to save as much weight as possible.
The 911 R is also expected to use either the naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six engine from the GT3 or the naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter engine from the GT3 RS. Regardless of which engine is used, it will reportedly be connected exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission.
Details will be announced in Geneva but previous reports have suggested the car will cost more than $160,000. If that number is correct, it will cost approximately $30,000 more than the 911 GT3.
