Especially when discussing the 991 many Porschephiles refer to how big the 911 has become.
It's true that if you put an original 911 against a 2015 model there is a massive difference - although I'd argue that, comparatively, the difference is no more than if you put a 70s Fiesta against the latest one - but I wondered if the 991 is actually that much bigger than the other more recent models.
A quick google around various sites got me the figures and although I can't claim them to be 'official' they seem pretty accurate.
Taking the Turbo as an example it's clear that the 991 isn't actually as much of a bloater as many people think - especially when compared to a 996T or 997T. The 'step change' happened in Y2k.
930 Turbo 4290mm long 1775 mm wide
964 Turbo 4275mm long 1775 mm wide
993 Turbo 4291mm long 1775 mm wide
996 Turbo 4435mm long 1830 mm wide
997 Turbo 4450mm long 1852 mm wide
991 Turbo 4506mm long 1880 mm wide
Given the relative degrees of performance and refinement the growth of 'only' 216mm in length and 105mm in width of a 991T vs a 930T seems pretty reasonable. :dont know:
An original 911 (4135mm long and 1600mm wide) compared to a 991T is pretty extreme though.
A 371mm difference in length and incredibly a 280mm (11 inches !!) difference in width is quite amazing.
