Should I track it?

By that, I mean properly track it. UK days but mostly Ring trips.

I bought an e92 M3 earlier this year and spent a lump on choice mods - brakes, wheels, tyres, suspension, seats, shifter etc. I then took it to he Ring thinking I had the ultimate weapon but I came away feeling frustrated at the car.

I am now thinking I have two options - spend further on the M3 both in mods and specialist tuning OR shift it on and spend the balance on the GT3.

The reason I haven't tracked the GT3 is mainly due to value as well as its a complete minter and I baby it. Not sure I could cope with a stone chip never mind the worst. As a result however and due to other toys and time constraints, I have driven the car once since August last year.

I have no intentions of ever selling the GT3 so I suppose value shouldn't matter too much other than what I actually paid for it. Getting it patina'd however may be another story.

Thoughts on this first world problem I have (what a moaning bastard eh)
 
If you can afford the running costs of tracking a GT3, track it. It's what they were built to do & there's nothing as satisfying to drive on the limit on a trackday as a GT3 imho. They're just too fast & capable for the road so the track is where you can really exploit them.

There's absolutely no point in owning a GT3 & not driving it. If you're worried about stonechips you should probably re-examine the reasons why you bought it.

My 996 GT3 has done over 175 trackdays in the 7.5 years I've had it (bought as a 20K mile minter & now on 127K miles) and although it may have a few battle scars, there's nothing that compromises the enjoyment of the car for me.

For my two pennith worth...TRACK THE GT3. Life is way too short, imagine what might happen in the next few years let alone when you are cycling along the road and here comes that lorry!. Not to be morbid, just that realiaty can bite at any time as sad as it is

Now if you are NOT going to sell it, and have not driven it since August, you need to ask yourself where your priorities lie. Keep as a MINT investment or get the fun out of it you have worked hard to deserve ?

Just my thoughts (jelous ones!)

Mine is just a lowly 4s , not as ££ as yours...

That GT purely Porsche evening at Brands earlier this year was one of the best things I have ever done full stop
I still smile and look back on the photos months later.

Went in with a fair degree of trepidation , and didn't even go for the Insurance. I decided I would tip toe around the track and slowly build confidence and find the grip

By the end you realise what amazing machines they are, and that by using on road only, we are merely scratching surface of capability.

I guess it all comes down to how significant the resale price is to you - do you want to be able to say "never tracked" when you come to sell it?

Judging by the OP's stated intention to never sell it, I can't imagine why he'd feel the need to preserve his car's track virginity.

Do you ever see "never been tracked" on a 2.7RS advert? What possible damage could be caused assuming that the car is cared for correctly?

It's like having a beautiful, fit girlfriend & never making love to her so that the next man in her life can enjoy her instead of you. But then people do have some funny ideas :floor:

No idea - but I see that statement on 997.1 GT3 ads. Friend of mine has a mint 997.1 GT3 RS and he's never tracked it. Sacrilege!

That's kind of my point - these things become unimportant once the car reaches the 10-15 year old point - by then you are far more interested in condition, which can't lie. Before then, people rely on service records & statements such as "never raced or rallied" (showing my age now!) along with variants of the classic "owned by a vicar who only went to church in it".

At 15+ years old, the question of tracked or not with a GT car is completely irrelevant & unless owned by 1 person from new the answer can't be relied upon anyway.
 
Nordschliefe = GT3 time, everytime.

You're only here once, and life is not a rehearsal. Just think a bit further
ahead when you're in your autumn years...you'll regret it hugely if you don't
really enjoy and exploit your car. When you're unable to do those things, its
the memories which live on.....go on and have fun in it.

Tracking cars is only a recent thing. When the 996 GT3 came out there was no such thing as track days. It doesn't mean the people who bought them didn't enjoy them and have fun.

I don't track my Porsche and I don't think I ever will. That does not mean I don't enjoy the car and drive spirited drives at times. But I do use it, and it seems a shame that the OP isn't even doing that. Especially as the weather has been pretty good this summer in the U.K. I'd say get the car out and take it for a drive. You will most likely remember all the reasons you love it.

My first 23 years of Porsche ownership had no tracking experiences to
compare with my motoring experiences. When I began tracking five or
so years ago, I quickly realised that I had only been getting a small part of
the fun in driving my Porsche...
But hey, ho we're all different, at least I know a little bit about both
elements and its like chalk and cheese. And to those who have never tried
it, you don't know what you're missing !.
