Odometer problem

Hi everyone,
My odometer recently stopped working. After alot of forum surfing I dismantled the speedo to find the tiny gear in the odometer drive had a tooth missing and had gone all rubbery. So I changed the gear and the pod. Put it all back together and all was well for a few hundred Km's then I noticed the numbers turning over too slowly, then it stopped completely then after 10 minutes it started working correctly again. For the rest of the day it stopped and started about four times. During all of this the speedo was working correctly.
Today I took it apart again and to my surprise everything still looks like new. The odometer numbers turn easily and the motor turns like a motor with strong magnets.
In all the stuff I have read nobody mentions an intermittent motor fault. Also am I right in thinking that the motor only runs the odometer or does it run the speedo too? As you can see I am pretty lost as to what to do next.
Any ideas please.
Thanks

Neil

I have had similar problems with my own and was unable to fix it myself.

Ed at www.porschedials.com provided me with the contact details for a VDO specialist in the Netherlands who repaired my faulty speedometer/odometer.

His name is Hans Peters
[email protected]

I am very happy with the service he provided. Attached are some of the photos that he sent me during the repairs.

Thanks very much for the info. I had a look at your photos and their web, they look like they have the right equipment to solve these kind of problems. I'll get in contact with them if I can't fix the problem myself.
Regards

Neil

Well time to put it all back together as I've got a trip to to northern Spain and France coming up on Sunday.
So I did and as expected it was just the same. The odometer didn't move on a spin around the block. Driving back I'm thinking a new speedo motor is required which don't seem to be available. So that really means new speedo at 1000 pounds plus. So nothing to lose, right. So I took the speedo out again and put a couple of drops of 3 in 1 on the motor bearing. Put it back in the car and it works, after 50 km it still works so that's good enough for me.
