Hankering after an Air cooled

They've been an interest for a while now but recently I've developed a serious itch for an air cooled. Coupled with the use of my fathers Triumph Stag I'm really enjoying the laid back classic car feel.

I can't seem to make up my mind between the SC and the Carrera 3.2. The 964 is also a consideration but I keep coming back to the earlier pre 89 models as I just love the classic look of them.

As with all my cars they're pure for fun and mainly only get used in the fairer weathers. There'd be no commuting but it needs to be usable (hence not buying an 3RS earlier this year).

I'm sure there'll be a few here that have or have had all of the above and it would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

To me too the impact bumper look and IMO the whale tail is THE Porsche 911 look, everything else after inherited the attributes and comfort that ordinary cars have.

Funny as I was only chatting about my 3.2 and digging out these photos yesterday:

Get an inspection done by someone expert on old 991's. My car as pictured needed more spending just on bodywork than I paid for my 993.

I'd love a really good 3.2 with the body done proper back to the tub, and there is the reason why some cars are up for twice the price of others, someone has spent the right money or you might have to.

Ace cars and am so glad to have owned one.

Slippery slope chum :hand: Bank on a few extra bags of reserve cash as there's always things to do :roll:

964 would be my choice, but then again I'm biased :grin:
 
As Clarkycat states these IB cars are the definitive 911..I am in the market for one and had a very close shave yesterday!! :eek: ... There are some horrific cars around.These aircooled 911's rot like an old Escort!
 
What was your close shave, Kas750? I've been looking for an aircooled 911 for ages, have travelled far and wide, and despite being ready to purchase have been bitterly disappointed by what I have found. Tatty, rusty, unloved vehicles all probably requiring best part of £10k to put into a decent state.

I've owned an air-cooled 911 so know what a good one is like. I know prices have risen sharply but that doesn't mean that sellers should expect someone to fork out £18-20k for a rotting, saggy example surely? Or perhaps world has gone mad and this is what the coupes are selling for?

I still maintain there can be some good ones - or at least honest ones - to be found this side of £20k, which will probably need a little work here and there and will have done a good few miles. No, they won't be perfect. In many if not most cases there will be a substantial bill at some point ahead for bodywork; and an engine rebuild will need to be done too - although not necessarily for a good few miles.

The key question is this. Should I even entertain any thoughts of buying a 911 with rusty sills? Or should I steer well clear? We know this most likely means new sills and work to kidney bowls will be required, and most likely a full respray, and chances are if rust is in one place it will be in others. Assuming that a £5-6k bill was likely to put the car right, do you reckon £15k would be a fair price to pay? Certainly there will be no short term gain investment-wise, but to get your hands behind a classic 911 it still seems like fairly good value. Not quite as good as it was two years ago, mind you.

What is not good value at all is paying some of the asking prices for cars with rust. Short term it may seem a good idea; but you only need to do a bit of Googling to discover the potential horror stories lurking out there. My old 911 was in great condition and was only 13 years old when I bought it, but even that had needed some serious welding to save the wings.

I agree with kas750 - there truly are some horrors out there.
 
My close shave was a red 911sc that was on ebay a couple of months ago.
It looked relatively tatty in the pics but was a together thing and it had just passed an MOT and as i was looking for something to "improve" it looked a good car..especially carrying a fresh mot..right??

WRONG!!!!.. to cut a long story short it was totally and utterly knackered.
I did some research and was contacted by a friend of friend that had been offered it and he had gone through it and bodily it pretty much needed everything!

In my experience the price asked bears no relationship to the quality of the body and everything and I mean everything aircooled is over priced at the moment... 2.7s... sportomatic's..targa's...none sports..shite colours.. all the crap that you had to pretty much give away not that long ago is now coveted.

"Everyone thinks their ducks are swans" is a phrase I heard many years ago which pretty much sums up the scene at the moment.
 
Sounds all too familiar. The blue SC targa I viewed was a similar story. Had undegone 'extensive renovation'. Despite this, the 'full leather' interior was a mish mash of part cloth/vinyl, seats felt like a saggy mattress, rips and tears everywhere; new roof seals were already coming off, despite bodywork having been done, rust was already appearing in the B pillars and tops of doors. One heat exchanger was about to crumble. It had full service history and details of rebuild - but all on an old style floppy disk, no good to anyone except someone with a time machine. The seller did have some receipts one of which, I kid you not, was a £12 invoice for a Porsche baseball cap! Perhaps we should wait until Scotland gets independence, country goes into a depression, and prices return to normal.
