Do I sell or do full restoration?

If you think it's going to cost you £10k then sell it, as you are well underestimating the costs.

My 964 has cost me over £20k so far (not including the purchase price) and it still needs loads more doing. And that's will trade contacts, lots of help and favours, and doing an awful lot myself. It will be at least another £5k, probably more.

Don't get me wrong, I love the impact bumper shape above all other shapes, and the 930 turbo (black on black) is THE dream 911 to me.

But the thought of owning one again gives me 'Rambo/Firefox' style flashbacks to bodyshops and bank balances.
:(

One hot afternoon Vicki found me shivering in a spike filled hole I had dug myself in our back garden, rugby sock round my head, mumbling something about the cost of laminated aluminium bumpers.

Another day she found me in a tea chest under the dining table, shaking like a sh1tting dog, trying to think about wing cost, in Russian.

Spare yourself 'the horror'...
:?

If you had your own bodyshop, and wanted to keep a project in the corner that you could have the lads fiddle round with in the spare half hours that crop up while waiting for someone else's paint to dry then it would be worth it. you could find the time to search for replacement panels etc but in the real world it is going to be a ball ache.

Fingers crossed the engine issue isn't too bad.

As usual some first class advice on here :thumb:

That is how come it took me so long to find a good 930. So many poor ones out there.

Get rid buy newer with newer technology, and build new memories cheaper in the long run :judge:

Well how about that, I am just finishing off a complete restoration of an 84 cabriolet. It should have been finished in March but I had other things to do but hope to get it back on the road by the end of (this) august. It is my first Porsche and it has gone well considering.

If you have not restored a car before, do not start with yours. From your own description it is a licence for others to take your money.

An excellent paint job, re trim and new hood is not as expensive as some might say particularly if you have contacts and can do some of the work yourself.

The biggest issue is the engine and rust, now that is expensive because of labour rate and the cost of engine parts and "it is never just a piston ring".

In this instance I would side with the "sell it" vote. To justify this for yourself start with the the real resale when finished value and knock off the cost of works.

Bad luck by the way the engines are meant to be bullet proof so we are told.

On a pragmatic note find a car with no rust or mechanical issues and start from there.

Thank you to everyone for their honesty and opinions! All very interesting....

Made me chuckle about the free car comment, I can understand that!

Also fair point on doing a resto then putting old tatty bits of trim back on the car. I guess everything would have to be new. What sort of prices has it cost people in the past? Some people are telling me £30k. I was thinking £10k so I'm waaaay out the ballpark.

I think I may repair whatever has happened the other day, spend money on putting it through an MOT, drive it for another month or so and then sell.

Thanks again for the responses.
Your engine rebuild could cost between £5 and 8 grand if you're sending it out to a reputable place depending on what needs replaced, bodywork including full respray is impossible to estimate until the car is stripped to find out the true extent of corrosion but over £10K is likely if there's a lot of cutting and welding to be done, you're talking about a full restoration not a quick tart up which would look good for a couple of years until the rust made itself known again, the man hours to get the chassis fully restored is considerable

It would be interesting to see the parts and labour bills for the restoration projects various OPCs are doing...

Absolutely huge.

Some OPCs are not too impressed!

Hi again everyone,

I have been ignoring my 911 for the past month whilst I've been busy with work. The garage came back to me and said it was a piston ring that has gone. I have been pondering over the past month about what to do...

I am going to sell the car, and I wanted to post it in here first before i go to eBay etc. I have a figure in my mind for what I want for it... If I don't get that amount, I will repair over a long period of time. It would be even more fantastic if anyone on here wanted a project to fix up? I would be happy to pay a member monthly whilst they worked on it in their free time, with no time limits (I still don't want to let it go!)

Please see below for pictures and pm me with any questions or offers, my mobile is 07732552891. Thanks a lot for all the advice everyone has given me, as you can tell, I'm still not committed to selling the car, but if the right offer comes in, I'll let it go.

It looks good from a distance (of about 50 yards). If it was a coupe you'd have a good chance but the cab limits the appeal with all the work involved especially as it's now bodywork and engine.

You may sadly gain more breaking for parts

Whichever way you go, best of luck :thumb:

I would just sell it on if you cant do the work , to give you an idea and I know its not a 911 , I have just finished restoring a 1988 ford escort rs turbo . I bought the car for a project at a cost of just £50 . i have done every thing to the car full nut and bolt restoration . the only work shipped out was powder coating some parts . this car that i paid just £50 for now stands me at £7000 and that's just parts ,materials and powder coating NO labour . so you could double that figure for a 911 parts list

I am looking for a project but that would be cost prohibitive for me,being a cab as well..

That said in the weird world of restorations there will always be a couple of hopefuls that are sure that they will be able to do the restoration on the cheap and if you can find one of those you may do ok.

Restoring a car is liking buying a mint one on drip.
You get the low initial deposit (purchase price),then your monthly payments (restoration costs) and then when you tally it all up the T.A.P is more than the car is worth!

To those who love classic cars, that cab, white in particular, looks absolutely stunning. That is a head turner more so than a coupe. Your average classic car enthusiast (not a 911ukier or rennlister), would choose that over a coupe any day.

It's a sports car, not a racing car.

The engine work wouldn't put me off, but it's a shame the rust has taken its toll, I'm guessing quite bad looking at the condition of the front wings.
Hope it works out for you whatever you decide to do.
