Porsche engineers were recently spotted testing a fleet of various 911 models in the colds of the Arctic Circle. The fleet consisted of prototypes for a mid-cycle update for the latest Porsche 911 and included prototypes for the basic 911 Carrera, high-performance 911 Turbo and the convertible 911 Carrera Cabriolet.

Featured here are photos of the updated 911 Carrera Cabriolet, which we expect to debut late this year or early next, alongside the updated version of the 911 Carrera coupe. Few details on Porsche's plans for its updated 911 are known, but the prototypes give away a few clues.

The front of the cars is characterized by revised daytime running lights and new intakes in the bumper that possibly feature an active grille-style function to help save fuel. At the rear we can see some new intakes at the sides of the bumper. The existing Carrera and Carrera S don't feature these, suggesting there may be some significant updates to the powertrains.

One of the prototypes also has a pair of centrally-mounted exhaust tips, a design not previously seen on a modern 911. The 911 GT3 does have centrally-mounted exhaust tips, though these are stacked together and don't feature a gap between them like the design seen here.

There have been suggestions that a new downsized engine may be fitted to the updated 911, or perhaps a revival of the GTS model which previously came in both coupe and cabrio flavors. Whatever the case, expect improved performance and fuel economy. Current 911 Carreras come with a 3.4-litre flat-six engine with 350 horsepower on tap. The Carrera S models, meanwhile, get a 3.8-litre flat-six engine with 400 horsepower.

I think these are similar photos that have been doing the rounds for a while.

I like the integrated indicator/daytime running leds. I hope those make it onto the Gen 2.

Tom.
