Another render of how the roof may work.

991 TARGA UPDATE!

http://www.porsche.com/microsite/911-targa/uk.aspx

Porsche's world premiere for the Detroit Motor Show 2014 is the new Porsche 991 Targa 4 and 4S. Both cars add to the existing Porsche 991 911 range with an innovative Targa-style, powered roof.

Just like the original 911 Targa model, the new Porsche 991 Targa model features a characteristic wide bar in place of the B-pillars. It gets a movable roof section above the driver and passenger, and a wrap-around rear window with no C-pillar. The difference is that the new model can be opened and closed at the push of a button. When fully lowered, the roof top is towed behind the rear seats. The roof is part soft top, part glass rear window.

The compartment lid, is opened and tilted at the push of a button. At the same time, two flaps open in the Targa bar, releasing the soft top which is folded into a Z-shape as the roof opens. The roof takes around 19 seconds to open or close using the buttons in the centre console and can be operated only while the vehicle is stationary. A wind deflector is also included in the cowl panel frame.

The roof panel uses a magnesium roof shell and panel bow. An additional sound absorber beneath the convertible-top covering has a thermal-insulating effect and reduces road noise when the roof is closed. The rear edge of the soft top connects up to the fixed Targa bar which features steel roll-over protection on the inside and painted cast aluminium on the outside.

The Porsche 991 Targa gets a rear-biased Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive system fitted as standard. As the Porsche 991 Targa is based on the 991 4 and 991 4S, it gets a wide-body look. The two models are both fitted with a seven-speed manual transmission as standard. The Porsche 991 Targa 4 is powered by a 3.4-litre, 350 hp flat-six engine. The Porsche 991 Targa 4S 911 Targa 4S delivers 400 hp from a displacement of 3.8 litres.

Equipped with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch transmission and Sport Chrono Package, the Targa 4 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 175 mph. Fuel consumption on the NEDC is between 29.7 mpg and 32.5 mpg Combined, depending on transmission, which corresponds to CO2 emissions between 223 and 204 g/km. The Targa 4S reaches a top speed of 184 mph and is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. Fuel consumption on the NEDC is between 28.2 mpg and 30.7 mpg, depending on transmission, which corresponds to CO2 between 237 and 214 g/km.

Standard equipment on each model includes leather interior, sports seats, automatic climate control, Bi-Xenon headlights, 7-inch colour touch-screen Porsche Communication Management with satellite navigation, digital radio, a universal audio interface offering MP3 connectivity, Porsche Stability Management (PSM), Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive and a three-year warranty.

Fitted to every 911 is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

The new 911 Targa models are available today, with first cars arriving in showrooms in May. The 911 Targa 4 is priced from £86,281 in the UK, the 911 Targa 4S priced from £96,316.

Loving this. Going to sell a few of these methinks

i expect the old style targas to get a lift in value with this new 'copy' on the roads :)

I was looking earlier! :D

Back in 1965, Porsche invented the 911 Targa as a matter necessity. Believing that a finicky National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was prepared to outlaw convertibles, the innovative automaker created the half-open car as a way to keep wind rushing through owners' hair. Though far removed from those formative days, it seems as though the 2015 Porsche 911 Targa has come to the Detroit Auto Show with a new-school version of some old-school tech.

While the last Targa featured a trick sliding glass roof at the touch of the button, the new car dramatically swallows a traditional-looking panel via an exceptionally complex-looking mechanical operation. The net result is "the same fun factor and freedom" that can be had with a complete convertible, though with slightly more open-driving protection while underway.

And, as is the case with all of the current 911 range, getting underway can be done with reasonable rapidity. The entry-level Targa 4 rocks a 350-horsepower, 3.4-liter flat-six engine just behind the rear axle, making that car good for 175 miles per hour at the top end (with the seven-speed manual, 174 mph with PDK) and a 0-to-60 sprint of 4.6 seconds. The Targa 4S, meanwhile, offers 400 horsepower from 3.8-liters of boxer six, runs to 60 in 4.2 seconds and hits a top "track speed" of 183 mph.

As you can make out from those "4" monikers after the Targa sobriquet, every version of the car will come complete with all-wheel drive. Porsche was pushing the Targa as the best 911 option for all climates, so the inclusion of all-wheel drive makes an element of sense. It also, no doubt, adds to the bottom line of the car – the Targa 4 starts at $101,600 and the Targa 4S asks $116,200 (add $995 worth of destination fees to both those numbers). Expect the car to make it into dealers in the summer of this year.

Looks fab and will no doubt be a sales success but the roof mechanism being inoperable on the move could be a bit of an own goal IMO...

I agree, but even that is still preferable to having to get out and physically lift panels out and stick in the boot.

A GT3 Targa would be interesting... :bandit:

You'd have to be careful what you're reversed up against (wall/garage door etc) before you 'remove' the roof though - have you seen the overhang when the roof is fully back & folding away? :)

Personally, I love it.....considering a 991S next year, and one of these could well fit the bill when my time comes!

Ok, for a 991, it doesn't look too shabby but apart from a flash opening/closing mechanism what does it offer over a traditional Cabriolet or a Coupe with a sunroof . :?:
