Gutted, has anyone in the uk done the welded coolant pipe??

Yes. Done last year as part of a comprehensive rebuild but it wasn't hard to separate some of the pipes from the castings so just caught in time I suspect.

Oh man you done the 3.9 rebuild :D :thumb:

To have it done I need to drop the engine out yeh?? Its a big job especially when am not looking for a rebuild anytime soon either.
How many hours would it take to drop the engine out and sort out the problem?

You're looking at something like 24 hours including enough of a strip to expose the castings & take them off & refit everything back again. Then you need to find yourself a competent alloy welder.

If you are paying to have it all done by an indie, I'd budget about £2K.

Thanks for that mate, one problem is up here is there's no garage I would trust :nooo:

JZM welded mine up in January. Mine were still in tight.

Hi mate,

How much did they charge and how long did they keep the vehicle for?
Cheers

I had lots of other work done at the same time, so the invoice in unclear to separate the coolant welding.

The original quote is on my old (broken) computer, but I think was £1500 plus specialist welding. Budget for £2k all in, PLUS they will likely find a few corroded pipes etc that may want changing whilst the engine is out. Also consider clutch.

I'd guess they'd want the car at least a full week.

Ahhh ok that's great thanks. I think ill need to hope for the best and leave it for the mean time as it would definitely be wise to change the clutch too as mines done 30k miles but in saying that, the clutch is perfect at the moment.

I really hope am not one of the unfortunate and pops a hose at speed

No plans to get mine done yet either. £2k for preventative maintenance for something that may never happen?
I'll wait until engine is out but that could be some time. It was out 1000 miles ago for clutch and an oil leak and given the miles I do, I hope it won't be out for a while.

Mine doesn't go on track. It may eventually for one or two trackdays a year and whilst I'd be a bit red-faced if I caused a stoppage. worse things happen on track than someone dropping their coolant.

It all depends on how you use your car and how much you want to try and second guess every eventuality, but I think it's a bit of an internet storm in a teacup.

I'm not knocking those that have had it done whilst doing other things but I won't be losing any sleep over whether my glue is still strong. :)

Pity you didn't think to get it done when the engine was already out as that's getting on for half the cost.

The glue won't hold forever, so I guess it's all down to this:

Haha! :)
Given the start to 2013 I've had I certainly don't feel lucky, but at the same time I can't warrant spending £2k just yet, to remove that risk.

I bought the car off a friend last September. He'd had the clutch and oil leak done along with a boat load of other work carried out by Redline Racing up in Teesside. We live another hour further north.

I am surprised that they didn't recommend the coolant fittings mod given their experience, especially since my mate dropped it off and said "Go right through it and do whatever it needs", as he wasn't planning on ever selling at that point. The bill was £7100 for this visit alone.

I will do it eventually but the car gets relatively light, summer road use so I'll keep everything crossed for the next couple of years. :)

Off topic Nick, I know you've a lot of GT3 experience what oil and gear oil do you run in yours these days?
Mobil 1 motorsport? Major service on mine next month. Was thinking of swepco gearoil although I normally take the approach of "Use manufacturer spec stuff and change it more regularly".
Mines a mk1 so I don't know if brass synchros make any difference?

I'm using the Millers NT range with good results. The 5W40 right now & then 10W50 when it gets warmer. Changed every 4K miles or so.

For gearbox oil I stick with the standard Mobil stuff that Porsche specifies, just changed twice a year.

Excellent, cheers.
I'll have a look at that. My indy says his 5/40 fully, is approved for all 911s after a certain date, but I'll still probably get my own stuff.

dammm

Ive just brought my gt3rs and im booked in on the 24-27th might take my spec c now as i could not imagine this on an open day.
