The Autowerks (Slough): Our Wheel Refurbishment work

Does anyone know the reason why the centre of the wheel (wher ethe centre cap sits) was always left unpainted? It tends to corrode obviously.

Do you think it was to do machining to get the mounting face 100% square/true to go on the hub....obviously they have to be mounted on the opposite face to where the studs go through?

Many refurbers paint over the mounting face what do you do Harry, can you machine these?

couldn't agree more, and whilst it always sits close to the top of priority list, something always comes up which means that spending time updating the website gets parked until i get time. unfortunately 'that time' never comes round between working in the workshop, taking phonecalls, paying suppliers, managing staff etc etc etc.

it's a shame because i love the site, but the lack of content really lets it down.

in our process the part behind the centre cap gets powdered, painted and lacquered as per the rest of the face of the wheel (the rear of the wheel is just powdered to replicate OEM finish).

in my opinion it's logical to cover it in order to avoid the common bubbling/corrosion that occurs around the centre cap of the wheel.

Accepted, but what do you do to the mounting face...if it has paint on then there is a chance the wheel will not sit true on the hub.

ah, i see what you were referring to earlier now.

the mounting face is finished in powdercoat, i appreciate your point about the chance of the wheel not sitting ture, but the thickness of the powder is a few hundred microns, which in the real world has a negligible effect on the running of the wheel

machining the mounting face afterwards would pose other problems such as water ingress beneath the powdercoat

also, if it were machined it would have to be machined on a very accurate lathe, in order to ensure a uniform amount of material was removed

Thanks...this is why I think they had to machine both areas in the factory. FYI My current wheels bought full refurbished did not have powdercoating on the mounting face. It is possible to mask off before powdercoating.
 
Autowerks Wheel Refurbishment 996 GT3

3 years later my wheels were looking a bit tired and were in need of a proer refurbishment as the paint had chipped in a few places and the effects of heat from trade days were taking their toll...

So gave Harry a Call at Autowerks http://www.the-autowerks.com/default.aspx who refurbished all the wheels

they also cleaned up the tail pipes and wheel arches... which came up pretty good after all those track days

Hi, I have some slightly tired looking 996 wheels that I want to look like brand new again, only 1 of the wheels has very minor kerbing , the 3 other are fine, can you send me a pm to do the job ?

Car is a daily driver so I cant really be without the car ?

Can you also do minor bodywork painting ?
