I,ve driven the 991

I do get that GT4, but as a piece of engineering Porsche has hit the mark with the 991, it's a very good, modern sports car. What is does and how it does it suits the way I want to use the car and what I want to use it for. If my sole criteria was maximum input for maximum reward I would probably opt for a Caterham, but that's another story.

Just to say I have really enjoyed all comments from all. I still have my 997S since Jan 2005. had a great time with it and when it came to swaping for a MKII, just could not justify the extra 35K porsche wanted for the upgrade. Then I test drove the GTS about a year ago with PDK and just did not like it for a simple reason that on downshift, it would not always do as I wanted. Now that I am considering a 991 (not having driven the car yet) I get a feeling that 911 is becoming a more of a GT. This is good and bad, if you're a daily driver and need the comfort then yet it is great, however, if you're a more of a driving enthusiast then may be not a good thing.
If I did not have kids, it would be a GT3/RS because I dont want to drive a porsche for comfy seats, but the challenge and imperfection of it's design, but I always have to settle for a 2x2 seating arrangement and GTS is becoming a more of an option......... or may be I am just getting old.....

Hence my caveat of "personal choice".

I won't hold any Porsche purchase against anyone.

I totally accept that point and I understand that there are times when we want a car that challenges us to drive it properly and rewards us for doing so, I don't think the 991 is that car, but that does not detract from my enjoyment, at least not yet! I actually found the GTS a bit draining at times, frantic and huge fun, but only when I was really pushing it, in the end I decided that it was 10 years too late for me!

Whisper it, but I've booked an extended test drive for a week in a manual 991 in July

Will be interesting to see what you think of the 991 with a manual box, I found that when I drove it the gear lever felt physically too high, although I am one of these people that drives with the seat on the floor, this was compared to the Cayman R that I was lent the previous week that had be thinking had I made a mistake not going for the manual.

Overall I found the 991 with manual box a compromise to cater for those who insisted on a manual box. Using the PDK in manual with the paddles in this variant of PDK is just fantastic.

Totally agree with many of the comments, the 997 felt more like a go-cart that you could chuck around, I would liken it to my Mk2 Escort (and thats not a bad thing) and at times I would say that I miss that feeling, but for my driving style and miles I do the 991 is the perfect choice.

Still loving mine, just ticked over the 1800 mile mark this morning.. by god it's quick.. and the noise with the roof down... omg

Looked at a 2.5ST next to a 991 at OPC Hatfield, and the taught little "pocket-rocket" really showed how "Mercedes-Benz" the 991 is.

Too high?

A criticism never levelled at the Carrera GT
