Porsche to Offer V8-Powered Cayenne S Diesel

Porsche is reportedly preparing to introduce a Cayenne S Diesel.

The Cayenne S diesel will pack a V8 instead of the regular Cayenne diesel's V6, and output should far exceed the six's 245 bhp and 406 lb-ft of torque. It's still unclear which engine Porsche will use for this model.

The diesel V8 currently in the corporate storehouse is a 4.2-litre TDI unit; in the Audi A8, it makes 346 bhp and 590 lb-ft of torque. This is not the freshest engine, however, and with rumours Bentley may include a diesel option in its cars in the future, a next-gen engine could be in development.

I like the smoke coming out of the rear exhausts.

There's no way Porsche would adopt this old lump for the Cayenne. The present 245bhp, 406lbft diesel is selling like hot cakes around the world at the moment, and the next engine upgrade will surely be the new 309bhp, 479lbft BiTDI unit from Audi which offers lower emmisions, lower fuel consumption and similar performance to the V8 unit.
Yes, I know the Toureg has it. And yes, the Range Rover has just received a V8 diesel - but that was to overcome the sheer mass of the blumin' thing.

Not sure where those spec's are from, but these are the new Touareg V8 TDI numbers (and the Cayenne is already engineered to accept it):

Volkswagen Touareg
Engine: 4.2-litre V8 turbodiesel
Max power: 335bhp @ 4000rpm
Max torque: 590lb ft
0 - 60mph: 5.8secs
Top speed: 150mph
Price: £56,530

If Porsche release the high-performance derivative, it will make 380 BHP and 680 lbft torque.

I might have to slip into reverse gear here, heard at the local OPC Boxster preview last night that the V8 diesel is definitely a runner and will sit alongside the present V6 diesel in the range until that itself gets relaced by the V6 BiTDI.
Its going to be pricey though, and how its going to cope with the upcoming EU6 regulations in 2014 is anybodys guess.

Very interesting times ahead for prospective Cayenne diesel buyers.
