Never seen the extinguisher mounted in that orientation :dont know:

Must be a real pain for the passenger - the normal north-south is bad enough.

ohhhhh very nice....for a kettle. Sorry for asking but whats the difference between a GT3 and 2

I am sure somebody will be along to give you the full low down soon, but the GT3 is N/A, the GT2 is a rear wheeldrive turbo with no traction control, no rear seats, and a bit more power than a turbo s or X50 turbo. I think the last ones were about 480hp. Lots of power and no driver aids led to them being known as 'the widowmaker'.
I looked at them when I got my turbo but it was a step to far for a road car for me, I wanted some 'help' when things went wrong, the extra traction of 4wd and back seats for my little lad.

East-west is in fact the intended orientation.

Did you manage to find a way of bolting the factory bracket to the holes provided in the car floor with the extinguisher fitted north-south, or did you make your own adapter? :?:

I think you've got the differences between the 2' and 3' pretty well covered.
The power delivery on a 3' is pretty linear whereas the 2' turbo motor
comes in a narrower power band, but that power arrives in a serious rush.
The 3' rev's considerably higher...on the RS version over 8200rpm...the 2'
has considerably more torgue (over 150 lbs + extra !).
There is no doubt that the power delivery of the 2' makes it the harder of
the two cars to master as a track weopon !...

Someone else will no doubt be along later !!! 8)

The GT3 Clubsport has it north-south & the holes come that way from the factory. How odd, you wouldn't have thought they'd change it on what is essentially the same shell.

Maybe it's not bolted in, just sort of placed there for the photo?

(Sherlock Holmes emoticon here)

Nick, I'm only posting so you can sleep tonight

Then my memory is playing tricks with me because I thought I remembered the 2 holes in the carpet and body floor being aligned east-west, and the GT2 and GT3 Clubsport fire extinguishers also being east-west, when installed, as shown in the GT2 ad linked to above.
The body-in-white was not changed from 996 GT3 to GT2 in this respect, so Senoj is probably right when he speculates that the extinguisher has just been laid loose on the floor of the car shown.
:dont know:

PS: Another thing that just occurs to me is that the Clubsport cars I was familiar with were the LHD version, and the reinforcing plate for the RHD version may have been aligned differently for some reason.

The only major point I haven't seen mentioned is that the original 996 GT3 was built using the Carrera's narrow body and the GT2 the Turbo's wide body (that is, across the rear axle).
The 996 GT2 was also the first of these models to have the air from the centre radiator venting over the boot lid to create aerodynamic downforce on the front axle.

REALLY nice, and surely a future classic.

Wonder how many are left..??? They seem to be going the same way as the Escort Cosworth - ie, through a hedge at 80mph

Mmm, I think you'll find that it's technically reducing lift rather than actually producing any appreciable downforce. I've got the angled centre rad, full GT2 chimney & ducting on my GT3; it is slightly noticeable over about 120mph but nowhere near the effect of a car with proper downforce which is much more noticeable at lower speeds.

Haven't found the equivalent test report for the 996 GT2 yet, but the attached Sport Auto Supertest report for the 997 GT2 shows that that magazine independently measured a downforce of 9kg at the front axle and 29kg on the rear axle at 200km in a wind tunnel for that car.

The Sport Auto Supertest of the 996.2 GT3 showed an aerodynamic lift at the front end of 13kg at 200 km, whilst the corresponding 996.2 GT3 RS with the same front centre rad chimney had 19kg lift, presumably due to the lever-effect of the high-downforce rear wing acting behind the rear axle.

997 is a different beast and does have (a bit of) downforce. Pretty sure the 996 variants only had varying amounts of lift.
