911 Targa on Wheeler Dealers

For those of you who haven't seen the piece on the 911 Targa, Discovery and Discovery HD will be screening both parts on Thursday morning (26th Jan), at 10:00 and 10:30.

I can't watch that episode, it makes me physically cringe when the expert who's car Mike Brewer drives says when asked about common problems, suggests that you should check the oil cap for white residue that would suggest the head gasket is gone.
 
It episode with green targa?

I laughed out loud at that point :grin:

Unrealistically cheap gearbox rebuild as well if I remember rightly...

I think these are to be enjoyed as entertainment, rather than documentary, a la "Top Gear". It amuses me to hear Mike Brewer professing satisfaction at a profit as low as £1K when he hasn't included 3-4 days of labour :wack:

I expect so, certainly the "Revisited" episode I saw was a green Targa.
 
Hi,

Quite old now, as said, it is for entertainment rather than a true car programe. They never factor in the labour costs, and the costs they do factor in are unrealistic.
The show is fun as light entertainment, and anything car related is a good thing.
Now, the Targa.... Green, awful, 2.7 engine????? The worst air cooled engine in this spec, and did Mike ask Edd if the car should have come with steel wheels and should they take off the Fuchs to replace with stell ones :floor:
Really does give the impression that you can buy an aircooled 911, in not too bad shape for around 4k, yeah right..
All fun though, anyone remember Deals on Wheels??

I've said this before but I was once involved in one of these episodes. I had to stand in and pretend to buy the car at the end.... I think they sold the car back to the guy they bought it from for the same money! I also seem to remember the director saying ' this is TV, not real life', kind of spoiled things for me..

those end sale deals they don on the car are horrific, with Mike getting all excited on a £200 profit ! after excluding the fact Ed has spend the best part of £3000 on labour !
 
That Wheeler Dealers episode has a lot to answer for...

When I first saw it 2 years ago I had my laptop open and thought "I wonder what I could buy a decent 911 for rather than an old cr@pper like they tarted up?"

The Internet is a dangerous thing, because 48hrs later my 996 was on my driveway.. yet I'd had no intention whatsoever of even buying another car, let alone a Porsche!

2 very happy and fun-filled years later and many more to come I hope. :D :D :D
 
My apologies for resurrecting an 8 year old thread but as the programme was already 6 years old when this thread was started I don't feel too guilty. :D

I hadn't seen this episode until last night.

In 2006 Mike Brewer bought a 1974 2.7 Targa for £5k after knocking the bloke down from £6k. It was an LHD car from California, rot free but recently resprayed in solid British Racing Green.

It needed a new gearbox but not much else. Laughably MB sourced a newly reconditioned exchange box for £1500 bringing their total spend (excluding labour obviously) to £7,040.

The car was then advertised and sold for £8,450.

Those were the days. :eek:

It wasn't a great car but I wonder what it would be worth now. :?:

Porsche as an INVESTMENT seems to have gained a bit since my pal bought his nice condition 964 back in 2009 for £16k from a specialist dealership, he has not used it much since then, but has added carbon fibre to bits`n pieces to the engine bay and polished everything while modifying it lightly to resemble an RS.... What`s it worth.. my guess is a lot more than he bought it for and has spent on it since, the market decides, but as we know markets can go both ways in time relative to external influences...?

Had he bought a Bitcoin in that same year, I think his returns might be higher today than a his very nice 964..?

On the other hand my friend has had many years of pleasure as the result of his Porsche ownership primarily because his a real Porsche enthusiast, and more so than he might enjoy the mere thought that should he wish to convert his 964 back to cash, the numbers might work out rather well.. I have the feeling he may never ever part with his 964, or perhaps even his 997.... Both seem to be equally treasured.... :worship:

Though 25 bags works better for me :)
