I have recently bought a 2004 cayenne 4.5 v8. The engine has developed a knocking noise which is loud when cold and quieter when warm, but still prominent. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem may be? Thanks in advance

That could be a whole host of problems, best get it to an OPC quickly

If you're in the SE, then OPC Byfleet in Surrey are recommended

The Cayenne can suffer from what's called "the death click". If your oil consumption is running at approx 1tr every 400 miles or so then one or more of your 8cyl's is/are eating it's bores......terminal engine failure. If your oil consumption is nearer 1500/2000 miles/ ltr then it's prob a camshaft or tappet related issue

Is there a specialist in south Yorkshire?

What's you oil consumption? If it's < 500m/per litre you won't need to waste time and money on a specialist, as it's eating away at the nakasil bore lining.

This(heavy oil consumption) is the "tell-tale" start of terminal engine failure, coupled with the death click(usually from no 6 or 8 cycl).

If your Cayenne is not using excess oil then you should be ok(re cam/hydraulic tappet/seal failure). So get it to a Porsche Indy
that has experience of these cars. Even the OPC will be able to tell you in about 10 mins whats probably going on.

The problem is that on the 4.5s/Turbo Cayenne it can be difficult to isolate and diagnose if the noise is actually a tappet/cam issues(rare) as the piston munching noise(more common) is located close by, with both sounding very similiar to the inexperienced ear.

...however if it's gulping oil, your engine is toast(99% probability)

Still in the garage, they just called me to say they are replacing all the hydraulic lifters on the left side, 16 in total. It's going to cost around £1600.

Does this sound right?

The oil consumption after 1000 miles could be seen on the dip stick. The oil level reduced by about 1/6th on the dip stick. Does this sound normal?

Thats good news vs £12k for an engine!

Oil consumption is ok(they do like oil). Ideally about 1200 miles/per litre should be the fine without worrying.

btw- get them to check for any play on the water pump bearing as the 4.5s can go through one every 35k miles. If there is any play get the pump changed as they fail completely soon after any play is detected(mine did).

Hope you get it fixed and no more issues for a while :thumb:

I was really worried when i heard about the 'death tick', then i checked the oil consumption and i was in real pain.

Hopefully the replacement of 16 hydraulic lifters will do the trick, not really sure why they can't identify the faulty lifter and replace just that one instead of replacing them all.

I'll get them to check the water pump aswell.

Thanks everyone

:)
