1977 911 Targa 2.7 buying advice

I'm on the verge of buying a mint condition 1977 Targa 2.7 but as I'm no mechanic I'm a bit concerned about some of the things I've read about engines frying at 50,000 miles. The car has 80,000 on the clock. I'd like to know what sort of things can be done to rectify potential engine problems and what the likely cost will be (or if this problem is just due to owners trashing their motors?)
