Hi Guys

I am new to the 911Uk forum. I have been looking for 997 C2S for 3-4 weeks and have managed to drill down to three cars. A car with 26K miles at an OPC for approx £40k, another with an independant with approx 26k miles for £37k and lastly a private sale with 33K miles for £35K 7months OPC warranty left.

The private car needs work i.e. Paint, wheels refurbed and valet + the tyres only approx 5K miles left. But the car does have 7 months OPC warranty.

The OPC car is a bit of a no brainer but it is by far the most expensive?

The car at the Indie is in superb condition but only comes with a AA Gold warranty.

What should I do and what questions should I ask? One last thing, prices seem to be in free fall at the moment should I wait until the spring to purchase.

Hi and Welcome RedRob

If I were you I would be looking at as many as I can and buy on condition and spec that ticks the boxes for you. Every Porsche is different: Spec, colour, trim, options, etc.

Personally I would not buy privately without having a proper professional PPI first, and I would only buy from a reputable Porsche Specialist (do a search on here) or an OPC with a good reputation.

Good luck, and check out a few threads on here that have asked similar questions, but I will be surprised if prices drop much lower than they are now (apart from normal depreciation of course).

After looking for 3 or 4 months I bought a 3 year old 997 Carrera 2S for 39K ( Sept) when I started looking prices were well into the forties but dropping steadily. My decision was made on price, spec, the p/x deal and condition. I had a limit of 40 k and didn't want to wait any longer for prices to drop, they will still probably continue to drop a bit I guess but only time or a crystal ball will tell by how much and at what rate.
My car came from an independant well respected ( non porsche specialist) dealer and was 2k short of it's scheduled 36,000 mile service. It had full OPC service history and 4 newish tyres. I managed to get the warranty signed over to me which had appprox 9 months left. I was keen to keep the service book stamped with OPC so had it serviced with them. During service they changed the plug coils under warranty so I was pleased to have the benefit of that and it came out of that big service relatively unscathed. I am delighted with the car no problems apart from trying to keep speed legal.
I know 911s are tough but it sounds like the private seller hasn't loved his car too much if the alloys are damaged and the car needs a valet plus theres a big service looming which could gobble up more money plus tyres, could find yourself near the other two cars moneywise by the time you have finished.
The more expensive OPC car is a no brainer for sheer peace of mind on a major investment as it will have been thoroughly checked over and its in their interest to look after you for future servicing etc. The independant's car sounds interesting and fair price. If the car has good OPC service history and the indie has good reputation and is a bit of a specialist then you could do worse than buying from them. If there isn't much to choose between these two cars I would go back to OPC and try get them to drop the price or give you a warranty or free service later.
When I was lookin the OPC's could n't get anywhere near the 40k budget I had so it shows how hard they are trying now. Half the fun is looking anyway buy the best you can! Good luck.

Hi RedRob,

I completed the purchase of my 997 C2S yesterday, so I have just completed the process, and hapily so. I bought from an independent dealer and like you am a 997 virgin, my only other Porsche experience being my wife's Boxster.

I'd echo Wattie's comments about the PPI. I engaged Peter Morgan (http://www.porscheinspections.com), who provided a speedy and knowledgeable service. A good PPI takes the guesswork out of the exercise for the prospective owwner while providing food for further negotiation and/or confidence that the car's a good one.

The basic advice seems to be to buy on condition and spec, with a good dark body colour, SatNav and Bose being high on the list. My suggestion would be to be clear about exactly what you want - Which features you feel are are Vital, nice to have or irrelevant.

If you wait long enough, of course, you'll always be able to buy cheaper, but then you'd never buy anything. There do seem to be quite a few cars around, but if you don't see the spec you want, don't be afraid to wait for the right car for you.

Good luck!

Assuming they all tick the boxes on spec.

The OPC car will have had to pass their full bumper to bumper warranty inpsection so all service items (brakes, tyres etc) will have been sorted as will the paintwork. Also will have the correct stamps in the service book.

I believe you will also get a minimum 12 month warranty (even longer if there is an existing warranty on the car).

When you price up the work required on the private sale and the peace of mind on the OPC prepared car with warranty then there is probably not much price difference.

Personally I would try and negotiate with the OPC and see if you can get a better deal to make the decision easy - tell them they are one of three and need to improve the deal. Maybe get them to extend the warranty for a further 12 months if they can't do anything on the price.

Thanks for all the feedback chaps.
I had a call today from the OPC today knocking a £1k off the car so I think this is route I am going to take. At least then I will be able to sleep soundly at night. Anybody got any idea how much the sports exhaust option is when the car is new?

Probably much more than £1k so trade them the discount for a sports exhaust if it hasn't already got one.

They will have much more flexibility on labour at the moment when they are all sat on their arses  .

I had a quote from an OPC yesterday for fitting a sports exhaust on a car they are selling - £1640 incl VAT. If I were interested in pursuing the deal I would definitely be trying to knock this down and roll it into the deal, as I believe they have room to manouevre with work like this.

:welcome:

and great choice of car and great time to be looking.
