Gear Selector Cables

I have a Cayman S (manual), when pulling away the gear stick felt loose and the car remained in 1st gear, no other gears could be selected. I think it may require a replacement gear selector cable, can anyone advise if this diagnosis sounds correct and how much this is likely to cost (assuming it is not covered under the porsche warranty)
