I am on the verge of buying my first Porsche. A 911 997 c2s. However this ongoing problem with the rear main oil seal and intermediate seal is concerning. The car does come with a 12 months or 12000 mile parts and labour warranty. After that i'm on my own. Is this some thing thats happens to all water cooled models? and is there any external signs to look out for? I would appreciate your advice.

You can get an 8 year warrantee on a 997 from new which gives peace of mind. Don't know where you are looking to buy from but if this cannot be part of the deal, walk away. There are plenty of good 997s around still covered with the warrantee.

? The 996 is 9 year ?

Just keep the Porsche warranty on the car and dont worry about it
you can cover up to its 10th birtday or 125,000 miles

As above, always ensure that you are covered by a PORSCHE warranty, not a third party product.

If the car is less than 2 years old it will have the original manufacturers warranty, thereafter it can be renewed annually. If you are buying a car that is out of the original warranty and doesn't have the Porsche extended one then you are going to need to get a 111 point check done by Porsche before you buy the car which will a) make sure that all is in order for some peace of mind and b) make the car elligible for a warranty. If any private seller or dealer refuses to let the car go in for a 111 point check then walk away as they might have something to hide.

or.... buy from a dealer like Stirlings who do all this for you.

I've been driving my 997 for 15 months now and aside from a small issue with the tracking system (human error by the operating company) and a puncture (totally my fault) it has never caused me a single problem. Rock solid. Note, on both of the issues above, a Porsche warranty includes access to Porsche Assistance (RAC) for free so you can call someone out even just for a puncture.

Also, if you buy on finance, you have some consumer protection built in which makes the finance company partly responsible for merchantable quality of the goods.

Thanks for that guys. The car in question is just over 3 years old with 13500 miles on the clock. It's up for sale at paragon porsche in sussex. The warranty is 12months or 12000 miles. This i suspect is a independant warranty. If i do decide to purchase this i might have it checked over at another independant porsche specialist near my home in Sheffield. Probably Millbrooke cars.

By the way, thumps up for Paragon, my clients who have bought there are happy. I've been down there and met one of the guys and inspected a car which was tip top. As for their warranty I think it is a third party warranty which they will obviously pay for so why not suggest there is a deal if they compromise the price to allow you to have the 111 point check and warranty i.e. about a grand.

Eventually you need to get the car covered on an official Porsche Extended Warranty.

RMS issues are actually more common on 996's. It's not common on 997's but then again it's not unheard of either.

RMS concerns would certainly not stop me buying a 2/3 year old 997.....which I hope I may now be able to do later this year.

BTW I looked at 2 x 996 turbos and a GT2 recently and the RMS was leaking on one of the 2004 turbo's. Neither had >45k miles.....on these babies the RMS it's a really ££££big job.

I've just read an article on the new 997. The crankcase now comes in two pieces not four as in the older 996/997 engines. I wonder if this will resolve the RMS problems!!!! Time will tell.

Thanks for that. Very help full. The one i was thinking about has had the price dropped by 2K Even more tempting.

Be aware that the previous post was for the new faceclifted 997. My current 997 C2S (2006) has had the RMS issue and been sorted under warranty.
