RACE REPORT

Watergames - Sean Edwards wins Sylverstone

06.07.2008

Konrad Motorsport pilot Sean Edwards wins the 7th round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Silverstone. Danny Watts ranking second, claimed his first Supercup podiumin in a race characterized by heavy rain. A strong performing Stefan Rosina ranked third. Table leader Bleekemolen only on P14. No points for Seyffarth and Mamerow.

First Supercup victory for Sean Edwards

'What kind of a day for a British race driver", winner Sean Edwards as well as Danny Watts, who finished second, shone during the winners interview in the Porsche Lounge. 'There is no better feeling than claiming the first win and the first podium at the British Grand Prix", the two Englishman said and received a great applause. Started from positions nine and twelve, the two drivers took profit from a very turbulent initial phase of the race.

With a splendid start Jaap van Lagen and Damien Faulkner closed up the gap to the leading drivers, while Stefan Rosina and Martin Ragginger had a bad start and dropped back some positions. According to the motto "now or never" van Lagen draws beside Sealens and with that initiated the confusion of the first laps in the race. In the puddles of the Silverstone Circuit the things were going haywire: Faulkners Lechner Porsche had a sensational Grip, not so the Porsche of Jaap van Lagen who crashed with blocking wheels into the Car of his compatriot Jeroen Bleekemolen. 'I was off the line and had aquaplaning", he apologized to his friend Jeroen Bleekemolen. With increasing water temperatures caused by a broken cooler, Jaap van Lagen had to retire from the race. At this time his opponent Bleekemolen dropped back to the end of the field, but with a good fighting spirit finally finished the race on 13th position, earning some points for the championship.

Everything looks as if the time for Jan Seyffarth and Damien Faulkner has come now. In a captivating way the Irishman goes trough the water and closes up to the top group; but only for a couple of meters. 'Some things happened, that never should have happened", Jan Seyffarth says. "Everybody around me spun, I have really lost my orientation and so I used the emergency exit. Doing so, I spun as well. Fortunately all other drivers on top of the standings struggled this weekend." Seyffarth commented his retirement. Damien Faulkener suffered the same fate. The Irishman also comes into the pitlane. 'It's a shame", he says. 'I could take the lead, my car was brilliant with a superb grip and than Seyffarth spun in front of me. Jan took the lead because he shortcut the track. He never should have been there, hit my car and push me out of the race."

Than a further collision in the midfield between Saelens, Ragginger, Huisman, O'Young and Petiz forced the safety-Car to come out. Eight laps were to go when the race was started again and definitely became a British matter. At first the Slovak Stefan Rosina took the lead. 'I am studying in England, so I am some kind of Brit as well", he laughs. But the Lechner pilot in the following laps is fought down by the real Brits. Sean Edwards and Danny Watts, started from Positions nine and twelve, plough trough the field, leaving all others without a chance. "We both are working here as instructors, so we should know the right line here", they say in unison. They really do! Inexorably the two Brits made their way up to the podium, taking Stefan Rosina along, who claimed his second podium finish within two weeks.

The reigning British Carrera Cup Champion James Sutton, who substituted René Rast in the MRS-Team, finishes fourth in front of Sebastiaan Bleekemolen, who claims his best result of the current season. With Marco Holzer, guest driver Sam Hancock, Norbert Siedler, Alex Zampedri and Tim Harvey the TOP10 completes.

With only a few points for championship leader Jeroen Bleekemolen and the retirement of Seyffarth and Mamerow the top of the driver standings remain nearly unchanged, except Danny Watts, who could take over third position in front of Chris Mamerow.

A summary of the race in Silverstone is transmitted on Sunday evening in the magazine 'Motorsports Weekend" at 20.45pm on TV-station Eurosport. The next round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup takes place at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim from July 18th to 20th.

Fantastic result Sean Edwards, I was down at Club for the race day, along with the victory by Lewis a wonderful day for the brits :)

Thanks to everyone for all the amazing support over the whole weekend! Glad you all enjoyed the race, despite the dreadful conditions!! The support from the crowd and all of you was amazing on the cool down lap and podium, I have never experienced anything like it in my life, just amazing, thanks  One of the best days in my life, to win my first Supercup race is one thing, but to win in front of 180,000ish home crowd was a truly amazing feeling...

Race report then.

My start was good, gained two places to 7th. Then I couldn't see anything into T1, so backed off and lost a few places again but then got them back through Maggots/Becketts and into Stowe.

All hell broke loose then, I saw a few cars spin ahead and just missed the UPS Porsche driver and then my team mate spun and got hit by Faulkner and I was up to 4th! I just missed hitting Rosina as he slammed his brakes on at Woodcote! As I overtook him I saw the safety car boards and the backed off and let him back past, it was really impossible to see anything in the spray, very lucky not to have a big crash there.

Van Lagen retired to the pits, with radiator damage from the lead, so I was up to P3 behind the safety car. I knew I had a good chance to win then, the car was good, I knew the track very well and it was going to be DNF or 1st for me :hand:

Restart came and me and Danny Watts were side by side through Copse and then through Maggots and Becketts too!! Great close racing and I held him off... Just!

I then went round the outside of David Saleens at Stowe and he just gave me enough room on the exit to squeeze through. I then set about attacking and planning my move for the lead. I tried the next lap into Stowe and had a bit of contact with Rosina, so let him go again.

Got a good run through woodcote, as I tried it flat out and dived down the inside of him into Copse and I was in the lead and could see where I was going :D

After that, I had no idea how many laps were left or how close the other car was behind, as all my windows were fogged up and I couldn't see anything out of the mirrors

I just put my head down and drove at near the limit, trying to stay on track and on line, which I just about did. I thought I saw the flag out of the corner of my eye and then I saw the marshals clapping at T1 and it was over. I was overjoyed and couldn't really believe it.

I really wanted to do some doughnuts, but we get fined heavily for that, so the best I could do was rev the engine all the way round and take in all the crowd's noise, it was outstanding.

I didn't have much time to celebrate with the team, because of TV time, so had to get up to the podium quickly and then a few TV interviews after that. Then got taken to do a talk in then VIP Porsche place and then via scooter to the Mobil 1 Paddock club for a 30 min Q and A. Then off to the Silverstone racing club for more Q and A and then somewhere else which I forget... Finally I was allowed back to the team to celebrate, it was a great feeling.
