Siverstone Circuit

Silverstone is regarded as the "Home of British engine Racing". After the Second World War the Englishmen rebuilt the former airfield of the Royal Air Force to a working racetrack on which today's Formula 1 debuted with its very first race on May 13th, 1950.

A number of quick passages which require a certain amount of courage from the drivers are characteristically for the 5.141 kilometres long Grand Prix Circuit. Since the tyres are used particularly hard on this track, the setup of the car is of a special significance. The Porsche Supercup is a inherent part of the English Grand Prix since 1994.

Jan Seyffarth at Silverstone

Silverstone is a very beautiful, completely flat and fast track which is quite a trial of courage. Nevertheless, it also has some slow and technically demanding passages. I personally like this track on which one have to find the right compromise between the fast and slow parts when doing the setup for the car. In silverston the suspension set-up is hard, which means that the tyre wear is heavy during the race. Those drivers who are fast at the opening stage of the race often loos positions at the end.

Turn 1
In this fourth gear curve it is necessary to carry the speed onto the following straight. While doing that you have to take care, not driving to close at the inside, because you could end up at the barriers.

Turn 2
In order to have to shift down and being on the breaks optimally, you drive on a straight line into this corner. The following right-hand fourth gear bend is done very fast. Since the curb is very flat, it can be included into the line. To have a good approach to the following left-hander it is necessary, not being too far on the outside at the exit.

Turn 3
A combination of barely using the brakes and shifting down one gear is done turn 2 and turn 3. At this point it is necessary again to keep your car quite on the left side, in order to have a good approach to the following right-hander.

Turn 4
Since it is followed by a long straight, this is the most important curve of the whole passage. Driving in third gear the brakes are used briefly. Then you have to be early on the throttle, to maintain a good speed for the following straight.

Turn 5
After the long straight you are hard on the breaks while shifting down from sixth to third gear. You brake far into the corner and since the curve opens at the exit you step on the throttle early again.

Turn 6
That is the slowest part of the track and it is done in second gear. In Order to prevent the car from being unstable and having a good entrance for the next curve, it is important to make not to much use of the curbs. The goal is to drive in a smooth way to carry on the momentum out of the following corner. It's a good place for overtaking.

Turn 7
Being on the throttle as early as possible is the goal at this point. Driving through the curve you already shift up to fourth gear. Since the curve closes on the exit, you should not drive to far at the outside of it.

Turn 8
This is a left-right combination which offers a good opportunity to overtake. In both corners the very flat curbs are included in the driving-line. The left-hander is driven more carefully in order to step early on the throttle and to carry the momentum further to the next part and being in a good position for the next corner.

Turn 9
A right-hander, which is done in forth gear almost flat! Just lifting the right foot for a short moment while going to the outside of the curb and then immediately right again is the best way for this point of the track. The difficult thing - on this uphill passage you can't see the exit of the corner. Obviously it's the most beautiful part for a driver on this track - really challenging!

Turn 10
A short step on the brake, shifting down to third gear and full on the throttle again will be ok for this curve, which opens at the exit.

Turn 11
A very slow part, you have to drive on the very left side at the exit.

Turn 12
Carrying the most possible onto the following straight is the goal here. That means being short on the brakes and early on the throttle again. You have to be careful here, because the car tends to over steer at the exit.

Seven drivers in the grid in the field of the 6th round for the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at the British GP in Silverstone are having a home race. With hopes, expectations but also a proper portion of respect these local hero are approaching the task to compete against Europe's best makes cup specialists.

Normally Supercup racing is only represented by only three drivers from Great Britain: Damien Faulkner and Danny Watts, both driving SAS-Lechner Racing, are ranking fifth and eighth in the championship, and compatriot Sean Edward, driving for Konrad Motorsport, who ranks on 13th position. While his driver colleagues Faulkner and Edwards already managed podium finishes, Danny Watts missed this goal so far. '"However, I believe that I am quite close to it. Just give me some time, maybe until the end of this weekend. We are already knocking at the door of the podium", the man from Buckingham is convinced.

At once a whole handful of guest starters are using the opportunity of the race in Silverstone to present themselves in front of a local audience. Porsche Cars of Great Britain entered two vehicles for the representatives of the British Carrera Cup. With an age of 46 year the threefold runner-up of the British Carrera Cup, Tim Harvey, after 2007 participates for the second time in the field of the Supercup pilots.

His team-mate Sam Hancock after his test race in Magny Cours is at the start for his second race on the European stage as well. 'If I finished within the top-12, if would be a reason for champagne", Harvey makes a jokes with a serious reason in his mind. 'I watched all races so far in the TV and I am really impressed by the competitiveness of the drives of this season."

As a last-minute substitute for the barred German René Rast, James Sutton will sit behind the wheel of the MRS-Team. The 22-year-old is the reigning champion of the British Porsche Carrera Cup, in which he won six of the twenty rounds last year. "My aim is to finish within the TOP10 and with that improving my result from last year", he says.

"However, to be honest, I do not know the course very well, because all races we did in Silverstone were held on a different option of the circuit." In the current season, Sutton drives a Ferrari F430 in the British GT championship. In the field of thirty cars of five manufacturers he ranks third at the moment.

At the very last minute James Pickford has jumped onto the Supercup train, driving for the Team Jetstream Racing. The obligation was announced by the team only on the Friday morning. Pickford is 28 years old, comes from Macclesfield Cheshire and is regarded as a Porsche specialist.

Buckingham, the hometown of Danny Watts, is only ten minutes away from Silverstone. Conerning motorsports the Lechner pilot has grown up at the Grand Prix Circuit and now hopes for his first podium finish in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. For racecam.de the Brit makes a philosophic approach about his most important race of the year.

"Silverstone is very deep in my heart", Danny Watts says full of conviction while he visits the Porsche-Hospitality for a short, 10 minutes break. "Home races are really something special, primarily because of all the interviews I have to do. There's hardly time to have a meal." Danny Watts already worked here at the karting track after finishing school for some years, before he became a instructor at the driving school.

Now, being one of the winning candidates of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, he returns to the place, where he had his first guest start in the series. 'At that time, having been a race winner in the British cup, I was really disappointed after I finished 9th in the qualifying and only 22nd in the race. I had to realize that I totally underestimated the Supercup", he admits.

Today he comes back to his home track. Ranking 8th in the championship with close contact to the leading drivers of the series and being the second best of the rookies, he competes in his most important race of the year in front of the huge crowd of the sold out Silverstone Circuit. "Racing is very popular in Great Britain generally.

The British fans are and have always been very, very passionate and enthusiastic. In addition to that we have got the Lewis Hamilton factor this weekend. That all helps the British GP, to be such a very special event nowadays as well as it was in the era of Nigel Mansel and Damon Hill.

"Danny Watts"
I am trying my best at my home Grand Prix, but it's by far the hardest championship I have ever done.

Danny Watts is well aware, that it could be his personal key-race of the current season. 'At the moment I am knocking at the door of the podium and hopefully I manage to open it this weekend", he starts brooding. Is he satisfied with the first half of the season? 'Yes I am and no I am not. It took me a long time to get used to the ceramic brakes we use in the Supercup and I also had to learn several new circuits this year.

Overall to be currently 8th in the championship is not a bad result and except my 8th rank in Monaco my results have been good so far. But now I really want to make the next level up und definitely get a podium finish."

That's an argumentation which is likely heard by his team manager Walter Lechner. The team owner from the Austrian Salzburg has a quite clear opinion about the course of the season so far. "We have tested a lot with Danny, among other circuits we have been in Bahrain and Barcelona. If I take all this into account, the results are not that way as they should be", he criticizes. "I hope Danny can comply with the expectations in the second half of the season – podium finishes are our aim.

Maybe he can use the home advantage here in Silverstone, because our goal is an absolute top rank in the championship", Lechner declares what he expects especially at the race classic at Silverstone. 'Walter is a very hard man and a very demanding team boss. He always expects 110% effort, commitment and enthusiasm from his drivers and his team, and that's the right way to do racing. I am trying my best at my home Grand Prix, but it's by far the hardest championship I have ever done. Nevertheless, as is said before – we are knocking at the door of the podium.

The qualifying at his native home ground didn't fulfil the hopes of the young Englishman. At his home race he only qualified for 12th grid position, what means his second worst result this season so far. 'I am really disappointed", he says. On Sunday it's time to activate the typical Watts-qualities: Fighting, never giving up and improving positions – Things, in which he succeeded many times already.
