A hard days work - Race 1 in Bahrain
05.04.2008
In a superior manner Damien Faulkner wins the season opener of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Bahrain, repeats his victory from last year and is the first leader in the driver standings. Jeroen Bleekemolen and Jan Seyffarth on the podium. Polesitter René Rast retired in the warm-up lap. Battlesome but fair race within the TOP10.
Faulkner wins in Bahrain
At 35° centigrade the faces of the MRS team members froze when Rene Rast returned into the pitlane after the warm-up lap. His race already ended before it really began. 'I had a problem with the power transmission, the car didn't move forward in the last corners. I had to park the car in the pitlane", the Supercup rookie explains disappointed. 'Now I have to get my head clear and give it another try with the pole position tomorrow."
"This was a misery for Rast", both Jeroen Bleekemolen as well as race winner Damien Faulkner commented the Germans bad luck. 'I was the lucky man, because I could easily take over the lead with that", Lechner pilot Damie Faulkner says. 'I had a brilliant car, my race engineer Mario made a superb job. A big thanks to him." Already during the 12 laps of the race Faulkner send a first note of thanks to the team with being 4/10 of a second faster than the rest of the Supercup world. With an advantage of eight seconds the Irish man finished the race and repeats his last year's success in Bahrain.
Behind the last year's runner-up the hard life raged within the TOP10. In parts four of the 420 hp strong Porsche 911 GT3 Cup went side at side around the track with Jeroen Bleekemolen, Jan Seyffarth, Danny Watts and Chris Mamerow being the main actors of the desert game. These "glorious four" raged in a millimetre gap over the tarmac and afterwards handed in their interpretation of their work. 'As quickly as I entered the Supercup I joined the podium", Jan Seyffarth gives a hint to his last minute contract with Konrad Motorsport. 'I think we have chosen the right one", team manager Franz Konrad smiles after an entertaining morning. "The fight with Jeroen has been a great fun and it was fair at every second. I was quicker, but I simply didn't manage to pass him", Seyffarth says. "I fully agree with Jan about the wonderful race", Jeroen Bleekemolen replies. "I have only best thoughts about Jan for remaining fair although I probably made him angry, because he was faster than me. He held the pressure permanently high so I couldn't find my rhythm at all."
Chris Mamerow with a distance of respect to the leading three also appeared in the top group. Behind the German, Jaap van Lagen, Nicolas Armindo, Stefan Rosina, Jiri Janak, Uwe Alzen and David Saelens impressively wrote race history. The quintet took the leading quartet in front as an example. TV pictures were as alike as two peas in a pod: Brave attacks, tough braking manoeuvres, simply motorsports of the finest art, from whom Stefan Rosina had to retire after a spin and after receiving the black flag.
The second round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will take place tomorrow at 12.15pm local time (11.15am MESZ). A live coverage of the action can be watched at Premiere and Eurosport2. Motors TV and Eurosport will send a summary of the weekend.
