Car - 1992 964 C4.
equipment available - double garage, flat, level, clean.
Trolley jack, axle stands, more spanners than a spanner shop

Me - Enthusiastic, used to changing oil on Cortina's and MGB's.

Still intending for specialist to do 12000 mile service, but can I do an interim 6000 mile oil and filter change myself

No legal comeback on any replyee's, just in case you were worried.

Thanks seagull, at least I know how the oil flows round the car now.

Found this one as well just now, with photo's, for people like me.

Just like Sundeep's tee shirt. Rather than wax on; wax off, it's oil out; oil in

Make sure you have a lot of empty canistors...

They hold a lot of oil!

The simple rule is put in a couple of litres less than it's supposed to take, warm up the engine to operating temp and then add 1/2 a litre at a time until you get the correct reading on the stick and the gauge.

Underfilling is not a disaster but overfilling is a no-no!

Boxsey. What are the problems arrising from overfilling?

Too much oil will cause the pressure to be very high. With slight overfilling the car will 'sweat it out' safely but might lead to oil dropping on the exhaust and a bit of smoke. Badly overfilled leads to the danger of the high pressure finding and rupturing a weak seal/joint and all the oil getting dumped out  .

This is a very useful thread so I'm going to move it to the 964 FAQs :D

we forgot one important thing - how much oil and what type?

any thoughts on this?

"For the 911 we would recomend a good 5w-40 full synthetic for all year round use, for spirited use and track days and ester based synthetic is the best choice, these are available from both Motul 300v and the Silkolene Pro S.

For the gearbox a good 75w-90 synthetic. Mobil 1 is popular but not the best. Have a look at the ester based Silkolene Syn5 75w-90 and the Motul Gear300."

I need to get some oil soon...

11 litres to be on the safe side.

As for what type, that seems to be down to personal preference and would be a very long dicussion from what I've seen

I've been recommended the Silkolene, and I know a few people who use it, and think its quite good...
