One year of ownership

Well, its a year now since i got my 996C4S.
The car had 17000 miles when i got it, and has now just passed 21000. Only 4000 miles in a year is not a lot i know, but the car is used nearly every day for my 4 mile commute to work.
When i got the car i knew it was going to need new discs and pads due to the dreaded corrosion on the inside face of the discs. The parts where about £700 from Porscheshop and i fitted them myself. It was a piece of cake, only took about 2 hours to do all four corners.
The next item was 4 new tyres, continentals at £650 fitted.
The car has now just had its 48000 mile (4 Year ) service at my local indy porsche specialists, cost for that was £450 including the spark plug change including vat. The car also passed its MOT with no problem.

All things considered i dont think these prices are too bad, its a lot cheaper than my previous M3 was for tyres and servicing.

The car came with an independant warranty (Not Porche warranty) from the indy dealer that i got the car from. The warranty does appear to be very comprehensive and covers all major engine components up to the value of the car. This warranty runs out begining of July and i dont yet know which way to go with the warranty, get the car 111 point inspected and take out the OPC warranty which will cost about £1000 (assuming it passes the inspection) or renew the independant warrnty at a cost of £350.

With my previous cars i have never bothered extending warranties and have never had any problems. But this is my first Porsche and i have never been so paranoid about major mechanical failure as i am with this car. I think this is probably the worst part of the ownership experience. I am just waiting for RMS failure, radiator problems, basically anything to go wrong.
I do get a bit of smoke from it on cold morning startups and also have the usual mayonnaise in the oil filer cap. The smoke goes away almost immediately and i am not using any coolant so dont think ther is a problem, it just appears to be a feature of this engine, or thats what i tell myself when lying awake at night worrying about it.

Having said all of this WHAT A CAR, ITS FANTASTIC. it looks great, is brilliant to drive, even my two kids love it and regularly get squeezed into the back of it for the school run.

Next on the aggenda is a sports exhaust (see my previous thread). Still havent made my mind upp which one to fit yet, but i will get one sorted, probably with an induction kit as well.
Also fancy doing some track days, did Silverstone GP circuit many years ago in my Escort Cosworth and fancy another go in the Posrche, also maybe a trip to the Ring.

Thanks for reading

Time to finish work now and go the long way home.

Rich

PS Hope the pics work

good work, a year must have flown by

Pic's now working

dont loose any sleep- i too have had my first porsche(99-996c2) for one year now at 55,000m .in the 7000m ive done its had a service -water header tank and a electric window mechanism. £660-00 total. no warranty.
i do have a slight rms leak- but just watch the oil level, doing no harm and i`ll sort it when i need a clutch. dont worry your driving the best affordable super car ever built.

Hi Ricky,

An excellent choice of 911 :D. Got to keep the 4S numbers up, what with all the attraction of the dark side, ie GT3.

Had my 4S about 15 months now and have to say each drive is an adventure. All the time getting more confident and pushing her that little bit further.

I would recommend the Porsche warranty having had a potential RMS issue that turned out to be a sump washer plug leak and a near side front rad replacment. Although the RMS is by all accounts fixed under good will now. Get the PSE you will not regret it. Best 996 option ever 8) .

Alan

allllan- do you your rms was fixed under good will from your waranty or your local opc are just fixing them gratis? i doubt this though?

Yep - had mine about 7 months now & had the PSM activate for the 1st time last night...I'm getting there

Nice car, good to see another 4S

I've done 8k miles in mine since March... I've never had so much commuting fun!

I've been very impressed with the running costs so far, I guess you'll find next year much cheaper as you'll only need an annual service.

Hi Rich,

I was certainly under the impression that the RMS is fixed as a gesture of good will thorugh Porsche GB. I bought my car through my local OPC so building up the relationship and having the warranty is always a positive thing. My problem was not RMS however the OPC said if it had been there would have been no cost.

Cheers Alan
