hello there.

After what seems like a lifetime of waiting, it finally - finally, looks like I'm going to get a Porsche. Sadly not the Guards red 911 Cabrio I wanted as a kid but a Boxster - which has pushed all my buttons in the right order. I'm extremely excited by the prospect to say the least.

Anyway - the web is the worst and the best place to research something. What has happened has paranoia has gotten the better of me now and despite having been an Alfa owner, I'm terrified about the reliability of the Porsche. Which seems rediculous reading it back. However - it's like having an itchy big toe, looking it up on the web and 'learning' you are about to die from terminal bum wrinkles. RMS, Engine exploding, etc., etc. I get the feeling they are reasonably rare but ...

Extended Warrantys. They seem to be a good idea. They look to be about £1000 but does anyone know the rules? Do I have to use an Official Dealer to service the car? Or can I still use indpendant specialists? How long does a £1000 warranty last? The Porsche Extended Warrenty seems to be most popular but are there 3rd party ones worth looking at? It all seems a confusing bag of snakes.

I guess it's a 'how long is a piece of string question' but if anyone has a indication I'd really appreciate it.

Also - independant Porsche specialists in the Cambridge area? Are there any?

I'm really sorry if these have been asked before!

All the best and thanks!

Will

welcome will - (good name)

Being a 964 owner I don't know much about these things but until someone more knowledgeable comes along I'll chip in with what i've gleaned from skulking here for 9 months or so.

For a warranty your car must pass a 111point check at an OPC then you can renew a warrantied car every year without the check provided no gaps

This is until your car reaches 9 yrs old (i think).

AFAIK there are some indies who can service your car and the warranty still be valid but I'm not sure who they are - some work/mods will invalidate the warranty I think

Anyway don't worry about the reliability issue - there are issues with any car but i'm sure statistically your more likely to write it off! - sorry if that isn't as comforting as you'd like! :D

And finally it may not be a 911 but it's still a porsche and a damn good car so 1 out of 2 aint bad

good luck and have fun

W

Thank you. I really appreciate that. I'll get a 911 next time ;) It's stupid I know. But the web is crawling with £12,000 engine rebuild 6 times in 2 years horror stories and the like. It's probably only natural to think "what if it happens to me?".

Your very right about the name by the way. A name for Kings you know. ;)

Now there is a question. Boxster S 3.2 2001 about 40,000 miles ...possibly ;) It's one of two. One is an auto the other a manual.

How much are you paying for it?

Like you I am also about to realise a dream and get a Porsche. Again like you, a Boxster.

From what I've learned by speaking to colleagues who own one and from reading until my eyes burst on the net they are pretty much bullet proof. If going for an older car i was advised to check it had the ream main seal replaced with the 987 one which is about the only design fault on the older Boxster.

However, as a result of all of my research and conversations I am deciding to buy a new one. It comes with a 2 year warranty and so on and there shouldnt really be anything wrong with it! Your also unlikely to blow the clutch out in the first few years of having it (I rag my corsa like an idiot sometimes and the clutch is still fine on that).

Have you thought about a new one? They are a lot more affordable than you might think at first...
