just spent my first day with my 996,what a joy did 80 miles just playing around to see what all the hype is about.if this car has got any serious flaws on handling or performance then they are well above my driving skills but for just normal driving it is wonderfull.having sold my sl55 to buy this was an exellent choice i have always loved the 911 shape but as you get older comfort becomes a factor and laziness but after driving many fast cars in the last few years i can say that this 996 is the best of the lot.the reason i took the plunge is the dead feeling i was getting driving the merc no communication from the car,and unreliable is not the word, way to many electricals that go wrong every couple of weeks costing thousands.so on to the 996 the only gripe i have is the stereo is awfull it has the so called later sat nav which is ok but the hifi part is not has anyone got any ideas as to what i can do with it to upgrade, i have speakers in the dash and rear of car but thats it,any advice would be good.i ahve been watching this forum for about a year and taking notes on how to maintain and buy so thanks to you all i think i got myself a good car.cheers pete

Hi Pete - and welcome to 911 ownership :)

Get your car on a trackday and play with it - there are no handling flaws with the 911 - just a different style :D
DON'T try barrelling into a corner at full tilt, then turn in and then lift off - or you'll be pointing the other way on the road (if you're lucky).

The 996 is a very competant car and a great daily driver / grand tourer. The best investment you can make now is to get some driver training from a 911 specialist - a couple of hundred quid will enhance your enjoyment a hundred times.

As for upgrading - if you've got sat nav, you'd most likely got PCM (Porsche Communications Management) - which was never very good when Becker produced it for Porsche

There's not a lot you can do - if it's a pre-MOST car (2002 model year) then you can put in a different head unit in the space below the PCM (there are adaptor kits you can buy) and fit external amps in the boot space - then run in new speakers into the front and back - then maybe go for a kick space sub under the passenger seat.

BUT the best thing you can do is turn the stereo off, fit the PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust) and open the window - then find every tunnel you can to drive through - best six speaker stereo in the world at the back of your car, already fitted :D

Congrats.. Similar to me having driven mostly Merc's in the past, still have old 380SL (W109) intersting your comments about the SL Electrics... I had same in late 90's S500 .. However, these "911 thingies" are so addictive you'll be looking for a bigger and better one (like me)... Intersting comment in 911 & Porsche World Feb-07 from Peter Morgan - "... very early on in my Porsche driving life, someone told me that there is always a better Porsche out there than the one you can afford. SO enjoy the one you have ......"

I too are looking for specialist driving day to up my confidence with the 911 ?? In fact any suggestions who and where it can done ??
