Picked up GT3!!!

Rob / Daz.

Of course we all want a good one, low miles, low owners, service history and well speced, aircon etc. As this post suggests the OPC did not deliver the peace of mind it should have and had this been bought privately there could have been some further issues trying to resolve this. There is a mention of many requiring 5k spending, although the one purchased in the end also had many problems.

I have seen a few people asking the forums ' does anyone know this car' and the chances are if they do it will have been on a track, but could still be well looked after. I have seen a lot of cars for sale with a service due in a couple of thousand miles and the warranty about to need renewing. This seems more the norm.

I will probably have a private inspection carried out on my next car and make the agree to purchase on the basis of it checking out.

What would be your tips for anyone purchasing, especially as most would prefer to go private purchase route. In most cases genuine people trust the HPI results as they know nothing mechanically or bodywork wise.

Rich

Rich,

if it's a GT3 you are looking at, then ask questions. Go to Titanic, Pistonheads, all over. There are not that many around & many that do have a history will be known by somebody. HPI will tell you nothing. you are looking at a circa £50k car, they will take a lot of damage to write-off. I wouldn't automaticaly discount an accident damaged car, the important thing is how well repaired was it. As Ade mentioned above you can have an accident damaged car returned to good as new state if done properly. Alternatively you could get one like Steve's that was badly done. Track work is not necessarily bad either. As time goes by most will have seen track action. Check the service history. What was done irrespective of the service intervals. Who did it? Car goes regularly to JZM or Parr, then definately been on track, but definately well cared for.

I don;t think there are any hard & fast rules, except caveat emptor (big time).

I know of a nice black one that may be coming up for sale....

I would check owner history first and foremost, get the dealer (if an OPC) to print out warranty work and dont trust the HPI - it could have had a big shunt, been repaired badly and you would never know!

Also watch out for Irish cars as they dont have to be registred when written off as far as I know!!

Anyway, one thing someone said to me once... "you buy the seller as much as the car", in other words if that person seems like someone you would trust the you are halfway there!!

Buyer beware!

As with any purchase, just use your commonsense. I know they all look wonderful, but to reuse an old saying, dont let the chopper short out the brain!!

It took me 3 months to find the one I wanted and I discounted several from OPCs as well as Independants

The most fastidious owners will have their car serviced by one of the reputable independents. It's a known fact that OPCs know relatively very little about the GT3 compared to the specialists. They are only serviced there out of fear of invalidating the warranty (which JZM and Parr do not). If the car has been serviced/maintained with a specialist, check with them directly to find out about the condition of the car.

Agree entirely tjhe above.

Had 1 service at the OPC, nice coffeee, nice lounge, even nicer bill. Fortunately they forgot to change thge plugs, which needless to say I had done at Parrs for 30% of the OPC quotation!!

Crazy
