Porsche warranty vs others.

Hello again all,

my car has an OPC service up until the last which was done by a specialist. So the question i have being more than a little paranoid about a possible "996 special" engine blow-up (and signs to look for would be appreciated if anyone has any experience?)

so:

1) Is it worth going back into the OPC service route and buying the warranty, would it cover the engine blow up thing. Does it cover lots or little?

2) Does anyone have any experience of after-market warranties and what they cover or otherwise?

I've read the other topics on the forum on this issue and how to go about it etc and whilst i think the catastrophic engine failure is covered i'm interested in other peoples exepriences...

Tim, I think the general consensus is that if you are going down a warranty route the Porsche one is best. Most others have claim limits, which would preclude a claim should the worst happen. At the end of the day you I personally believe the Porsche warranty is good value, if only for the piece of mind.

I think the Porsche warranty is the best.
You do not have to have it serviced by them.
But you will then need to have it inspected the OPC every year.
Of course in the case of a contentious issue, good will is likely to be reduced if they do not service it.

thanks chaps, that was the the impression i'd got from reading some of your posts. one other question, if the 996 cylinder head thing was spotted early enough would the repair bill still necessitate a new engine/engine re-build? i.e before it went catastrophic?

What cylinder head thing?

In general, oil leaks, gaskets other easy bits can be repaired.
I think the main issue that causes them to recommend replacement is anything where the oil could be contanimated with metal particles, such as a bearing breaking up.
The one for the intermediate shaft can fail (as could any of them in time).
The small metal particles that come from the bearing are distributed throughout all the oil ways. Most will end up in the oil filter.
Since the engine is designed to run with Mobil 1, which is quite thin, the oil ways are small. A small piece of metal could block one, or at least reduce the flow of oil.
Flushing all the oil ways and making sure they are clear is time consuming.
They won't guarantee they will be clear, so will not warranty the work. So they go for replacement.
The other problem is the per-hour labour costs. It doesn't take long before it is uneconomic to try to fix the issue.
Of course if you did it yourself, then very few things really require replacement, and of those most could be fixed by replacing one cylinder bank or a head.

I don't know how you indentify there is a problem with the cylinder liner.
If it moves or cracks or is porous, then up to the point where it moves or cracks (or whatver) it is working fine.
Depending on the failure mechanism I suppose you could notice a drop in compression or power, but I doubt it.
The only real way would be to disassemble the engine.
Cracks could be found either by banging the liners, since a cracked one will not ring, or by ultra-sonic inspection if you want to go high tech.

Assuming you could somehow identify the issue, or even if you couldn't but just wanted to be ultra-safe, you could just replace all the liners. As long as the parts and labour costs make it economic.
I can't see any reason to replace the whole engine.

Cylinder liner cracks are very rare, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If it happens, there's not much you can do about it and it's hard to identify the problem without taking the engine apart.
