Hello everyone excellent forum you have here, i hope you can spare me some of your time and knowledge.

I have never purchased a porsche but always wanted one. I have been looking on the porsche website and found one i quite like.

Now this is where i need your help guy's and i know you won't know exacly what i want to here but it's worth me asking.

1.How much would it cost to maintain this car a year,service,tyres ect.

2.HOW RELIABLE IS THIS CAR.

3.Will i need to service the car at a porsche centre where i purchased it to retain the warranty or can i go to an independant porsche specialist.

anyway no real experience of 996's but as a rough idea say average of 10k miles pa

1) £2k-£3k,that should include an inspection and OPC warranty every year,a set of tyres,a service and any other incidentals,beware tho it could cost more 1 year and next to nothing another year

2)should be reliable enough if its coming from an OPC,they are supposed to only buy the best examples tho obviously there will be one or two that might slip throught the net

3)AFAIK as long as its an OPC that service it,then your warranty will be intact,AFAIK you can use an Indie for non service work,as long as they use genuine parts



a good idea is to give Mark Pearce aka Stirlings a look as he "puts" on OPC warranties to his stock(well in a convulted way thanks to FSA/Porsche GB rules)

Tyres cost around £700, although they are supposed to be going up. How long they last depands on how hard you drive, and whether you drive on track. Rears wear faster than the fronts. 12K miles on the road is average, but 16K or more possible with just motorway use.

Servicing is not that expensive if nothing needs replacing.
£300 to £1000 depending on what you have done (at OPC).
You may want to get the alignment checked from time to time too, since this affects the handling.

Insurance can be one of the single biggest expenses, so check this before you buy.

Most big bits are reliable, engine + gearbox. These are coverered under extended warranty to 9 years/120K miles if you keep the car as standard. Any engine mod will invalidate this.
Only real issue is the RMS, although this does not affect all cars and is normally quite minor. A few drop of oil is not really a reliability issue.

You can service it where you like.
To keep the extended warranty if you do not let the OPC service it, requires you to have an annual inspection by them. This is my understanding.
You would need to check the details, since they may try to wriggle out of this.

Hi sibz

I've had mine since Jan 2005 and have maintained the extended warranty, in the main because of RMS fears. To keep the warranty, OPC need to service otherwise they will charge you the 111 point check price to renew each year. This can be anything from 100-200 quid plus, so if you're not saving that on the indie service then its pointless. I've had two services, including a 24k even though its only got 19k on the clock at roughly £1300 each time. Both occasions £725 of that was the extended warranty. On the first, the service including parts was around £500, second time I was late on the service and the warranty renewal, so I got a 'reduced 111 point check' for a £100 and a service just over £400. This year I got a new set of conti sport contacts after mrs H trashed a pirrelli and the wheel. That was £700 all in. So budget about 1200-1300 inclusive of warranty and you'll be somewhere close. If you're not tracking, driving hard and regularly, you'll get plenty of use from the tyres.

Quite a few of us don't get any more than 6-8K miles out of the rears! :eek:

Thanks for all the replys guys, would you say the warranty is essential, if so why, do i need to use it oftn lol :wink:

Also guy's how often am i replacing the brakes on the 996 c4's, bear in mind no track days or motorways just around town driving, they look very very pricey from porsche.

Just a final quick question about finance if anyone knows, my example...

£40K Car, £5k Deposit, longest time period possible and with a ballon payment on the end (as much as possible) what would my monthly payment be???

This is with porsche centre's by the way.

might be easier just to use 1 thread - you have asked this question on the other one you have posted. You can easily go a whole year by the way on brakes, just depends how fast and hard you use them
