GT3 Buyer Beware Horror Story

My first 996 was cat 'D' registered brought from a specialist indie bodyshop. It had been repaired to a very hight standard and i bought it at a price that reflected it's history. The OPC could not even tell it had been repaired when inspected.

Based this experience, I looked at a cat 'D' ex Ulster GT3 (05/05 Silver) some months ago. The salvage yard told me about the "Irish" loop hole, hence I mentioned it last week.

Point is 'cat D' 911's are fine providing they have been repaired to a high standard and are priced accordingly.

Daz, Thanks for the heads up. My GT3 Search continues! Following the PPI, the Aberdeen car needed £3k worth of work so I walked away. I do believe the indie dealer thought the car was in top condition given it had been subject to a full OPC service 900 miles ago. They were nieve and failed to visually check the brakes and engine. Turns out it needs an RMS seal, new front discs & pads, both rear shockers, new front air ducts and the rear discs are corroded!

You two seem to be having fun with GT3s!

Can't begin to tell you how much time I've invested in the search.

To me the thing to bear in mind with a GT3 or other high value car is that it will take a lot of damage to write it off. Personally I wouldn't touch a high value car that has been written off. A car of much lower value will need to sustain relatively little damage to be a write off. What's perfectly feasabile to repair on a GT3 will write off a 964 or 993. The moral to me is that you need to understand what damage was sustained before any decision to buy.

What have some of the major problems been?

I am so impressed with the knowledge of some people around here. I thought I had learned quite a lot on here before buying and since. But hats off, some of you just know so much about the wonderful cars.

Drove 220 miles to see a "mint 03 car with only 10k miles" to find out it was a nail. Spent the last two weeks negotiating on a car in Aberdeen. I was told it was in excellent condition, only serviced 900 miles ago by local OPC. Local OPC inspection showed up £3k work required.

Rob, just a thought, did you have a PPI carried out for your car when you bought? Would be a few red faces if you did!

What do you mean by a nail - is it brakes and disks, gearbox, engine, bodywork damage. Why don't people negoiatate once you find the problems?

My car was bought from Bournemouth OPC, I probably paid £3k over what I could have paid in a private sale at the time (mind you a local OPC was selling an identical 3 for £2k on top of what I paid).

Car was mint, new front discs and pads, tyres all round. Rear discs started squealing after 500 miles, they changed them and pads without a quibble.

You pay you money for peace of mind and service, and I got both.

You try and find the cheapest or best value 3 out there and you may end up saving money, but in your case Daz how much time are you spending with one eye looking for a 3 and one eye off your business?

Just my 2p's worth
