Why do people put GT3 kits on cars?

I have been looking for a good C2 on all the sources.

I hope you don't take this as a dig - but why is everyone into adding GT3 kits to a C2?

Isn't that tantamount to an Escort boy chavving up his car to a Cosworth? When really its a 1.3?

I just don't see the point.

Well Colin,

The thing is the C2 is a bit plain, the GT3 kit transforms the whole appearance.

When the C4S had to be introduced because sales of narrow body 911's were struggling cos they looked so much like boxsters, the 3 kit gives it a nice stance.

Granted done poorly they look awful, and you have to do the whole thing, correct wheels lower the suspension etc etc, and clour has a lot to do with it.

The difference with the escort brigade isnt that great, as a boy racer may put a tasteful spoiler on a sporty escort and enhance its appearance, while a chav would put a huge spoiler and drain pipe at the back and destroy its appearace, same applies to 911's.

Case in point, if i was in the market for a pre facelift C2, I would only buy a manual with the correct kit on it.

Hi SF
thanks for the explanation. Could you tell me when 'pre' and post facelift cars came about?

I looked at a 97 today - I assume thats pre-facelift.

many thanks

there were several facelifts with the 911 996

Some of this I am not 100% certain of, here goes

the 996 launched 1997 with headlights the same as Boxster.

1999 headlights become one unit and clear, to differentiate from the Boxster.

2001 51 plate on facelift with clear single unit headlights introduced which were far better looking.

Most early 996's have had the clear lense upgrade,

The were other mods to the cars on facelift, such as diffrent methods to open boot and lugage compartment, cup holder, glove box, sat nav system, wheels, also the big one the engine was enlarged from 3.4 to 3.6 in 2001 giving 320hp as opposed to 299hp

There is loads of other stuff, however I believe that to be the main,

If you do a search on Autotrader, there is a beautiful 996 2000 W in dark blue with the three kit, manual and sports seats 32k miles and only £30k, price which I think is good value

As Daz says to some the GT3 kit does improve the general look of a car. One of the other differences is that Porsche do offer it as a factory option, it's not a cheap aftermarket Halfords special! If the look appeals I don't see the problem, now putting a GT3 badge on is a different issue.

I've put 20" alloys on my RRS which are the ones from the top of the range supercharged version. I've also switched the front grill to the one from the supercharged & fitted colour coded supercharger air intake grills. To me it just makes the car look better. I'm not trying to pretend I have a supercharged RRS. Most of the manufacturers have subtle cosmetic differences between top of the range models & normal models. Usually the top of the range models look better, hence many try to copy elements from the top of the range models.

on those mk1's the gt3 kit kind of helps when main concern was how similiar the boxster looked !!

If I was getting a pre-facelift it would have to have the aerokit on it. A beauty indeed.

That looks tidy. Would it be possible to remove the GT3 badge and restore a 'Carrera' badge quite easily?

I expect a badge can be bought.

I'll probably trip over to view that car.
