What to look for 964 C4

Don't under estimate the rear lights and reflector.
They split along the top, fill with water, stop the lights working and then take £500 out of your pocket for replacements

Interesting one that Ian, thanks. I have heard things about it, but not a proper explanation like that.

Yeah the rear lights are not cheap! Will make sure they are good.

Cheers guys

Jay

The "clock unit cold solder problem" that causes the ABS, seatbelt or airbag light not to go out until you rev over 2500-3000 rpm on start up. This indicates the soldered connections on the back of the clock unit (which feeds a lot of other bits) are breaking down which results in the alternator not charging the battery if it gets worse.Ian.
Another superb write up from the essential p-car website:

No not yet, didn't have it in the paper shop. Will hopefully get one later. I did however have a copy of another Porsche mag from 2002 with a 964 C4 buyers guide in. Must have been fate :)

Hi Jay,

I went through exactly the same process 12 months ago.

In addition to everything the guide says (march 2002) I considered the following points.

1) Service History. Whilst you will want 17 years worth of stamps in the book these cars have changed hand numerous time in different countries. Personally I would look for a more recent service history (last 5 years). As the price of these cars come down some owners are less particular about the basics and it shows on some cars.

2) Engine rebuilds. As above if someone else has spent 5k on a rebuild its 5k you have saved. These are usually between 60-100k imho.

3) Clutch. This is the first Porker with 4WD. You cannot just rev the engine and drop the clutch. Look out for that burning smell.

4) Oil leaks, ensure you get the engine guard off for a good look, it can hide a multitude of sins.

Remember that the car will be 17 years old so expect a few stone chips, water ingress on the windscreen and minor marks on the body work. I didn't worry about these.

You will need a budget of 13k plus £1500 for any emergencies. There are some great ones out there you just need to keep looking. I paid 10k for a 70k miler F reg 1989 LHD C4 last year. Best decision I ever made!!

Jay,it might be worthwhile you getting it inspected by either an OPC or Porker specialist,as they'll know whats what more than yerself, they'll also know what to look for, whats serious, minor or unimportant. Also figure in an HPi report, tho Daniel Sait can do this for you FOC?????? as its maybe the "lower" end of the 911 market your looking at it can still be a minefield of dodgy motors, and better safeguard yer money by checking things are bona-fide

Jay,

You will need a socket set with all the bits as you can be sure the bolts are not all original. I would also consider a PPI as Rodders suggests if you are serious about a car on a second viewing.
