993 performance

When shes cold she is a bitch to get into first and has to be treated very gently.

This is despite having a replacement box and clutch and flywheel, I have driven others and they are the same.

When she is hot and hammered the change is like sex, fantastic.

I guess this is how it is. P.S perfomance when the temp outside is colder and engine on song is superb.

Reverse can be difficult to find sometimes.

Daz.

my 993 gearbox is a dream - no probs getting it into any gear - are you sure you are depressing the clutch all the way before you try to get a gear?

Migration info. Legacy thread was 34490

Always depress clutch fully before changing gear, I have had a few porsches but only one 993, however I have driven a couple and have found them to be the same. Mine was like this before I changed the gearbox and clutch, the people who replaced these said that this how the cars are.

never hard problems with 1st on any 993 i've driven,

if the clutch is heavy it probably needs changing

Migration info. Legacy thread was 34496

Clutch isnt heavy and was changed 2000 miles ago, The gearbox was exactly as it is now immiediately after the clutch change. The clutch cylinder has also been changed.

I had a 996 and the gear change on that was far better however when they are hot they are pretty simillar.

The gear change puts me off buying a 993 turbo 4, are you telling me that the gear change shouldnt be as mechanichal as it is. Also the garage that sorted my gearbox are specialist in porsche however I will get a second opinion.

P.S I really, really, really want a 993 turbo, so bad that I am looking at the one on the Cridfords advert in black it is a CAT D but looks fantastic.

What do you think.

Migration info. Legacy thread was 34497

My gearbox had a 'positive' feeling - heavier than most modern cars - but never baulked a gear - slightly tighter when cold, but not ever as bad as you are describing.

Two thoughts - as Warren says perhaps as the gear mechanism or perhaps the clutch was not actually changed if you used someone dodgy?? (sorry to suggest that possibility)

Cheers, LJ

I beleive that the clutch was changed as I saw the old one,

however what do you mean by gear mechanism?

Daz,

Bike or Car which one do you prefer?

Mine too. Sounds like something's amiss with your, Darren.

its done 121k miles and I am adding on average 500 miles per week, could this be the cause.

Should I keep it in the garage and use one of the other cars, possibly but I cant help myself rain or shine.

Love the whole porsche 993 thing, wish it was faster maybe time for a turbo 4 with all the kit.
Sunnroof, hard backed seats, sound processor, carbon pack, sports switchable exauhust, remap, 6 stack, white dials. In guards red and with a private plate perhaps P10RKR.

Darren we mean the linkage from your gearlever to the gearbox -

Maybe your new clutch needs to be adjusted or bled or something like the fork (?) is bent - although that should have been checked -

LJ

When gearbox originally failed the linkage was checked, before stripping of gearbox which revealed failed input shaft (I think) and several missing teeth from various cogs. I am not a mechanic but I had a look at the bits and it was bad.

The clutch is good with plenty of bite and life, the only thing is that when cold she is very mechanical. It isnt getting any worse and it is the same as the day I drove it from the garage following replacement. I put down the previous failure to the hammering the car had on the track, I have since also replaced the brake disks and pads and tyres.
When you guys say that you have a lovely gear change, is this even when the engine is cold?
I can live with it, in fact when I purchased the car originally I took it to a separate specialist who drove it and said it was as it should be. Perhaps I was a bit spoiled by the 996 change and it is as it is.

Thanks.
Daz.
